We train and place highly skilled service dogs while transforming lives through volunteerism, community partnerships, and second chances. 🐾💛 We are a registered 501(c) non-profit organization that breeds, trains and places top quality service dogs with children and adults living with physical and mental disabilities.

Birdie has joined the counseling team at FC&S at Honey Alexander Center, working alongside fellow facility dog Junebug. We are so excited for her! Congratulations to Birdie & her team of trainers & volunteers!

Big news from the RI family ✨

Retrieving Independence is now officially accredited by Assistance Dogs International — the global leader in setting standards for assistance dog organizations.

This milestone belongs to everyone who shapes our mission — the trainers, volunteers, incarcerated handlers, clients, supporters, and of course, the dogs who give their all every day.

The biggest of thanks & gratitude to all who helped us get here!!!
 We’re SO excited for what this opens up next.

🐾 Career Changed Dogs Update!

🎓 Chip (formerly Campbell)

Chip recently graduated as an Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9 with Our Rescue and will be joining the Virginia Beach Police Department. We couldn’t be prouder of the work he’ll be doing to keep communities safe!

🛡️ Betty & Handler Carlos Figueroa

Betty continues to shine in her role detecting explosives and fi****ms in one of Manhattan’s largest office buildings. Her focus, dedication, and partnership with Carlos are a perfect example of a dog thriving in a career.

We’re thrilled to cheer on our career changed dogs from afar, celebrating the incredible work they do and the joy of seeing them thrive in new roles. Moments like these remind us why Retrieving Independence exists: to set dogs up for success, wherever life takes them. 💙
