The Friends had a wonderful time visiting and exploring studio! Stacy and the FLC artists generously shared insights into their creative processes and the inspirations behind their work. Stacy also treated them to a live oil painting demonstration—and they even had the pleasure of meeting his beloved therapy dog, Orvis, who keeps him company each day at the gallery.

Meet our Teaching Artist in Residency: 🎨

More about Courtney:
My name is Courtney Gatewood. I am a wife, a mother, an artist, a researcher, and an educator, driven by a curiosity about the world around me. As an artist, I enjoy discovering new materials; this exploration and experimentation with unfamiliar resources contribute to my personal growth and stimulate my thoughts about my feelings.

As an artist, I’ve discovered a certain illumination in connecting with others through art. Whether we’re discussing it or creating together, it always seems to ignite a spark in someone’s eye; at times, that eye happens to be mine.

I have discovered that delving into memory, familiarity, traditions, and perspective fosters connections in my work. My goal is to connect with and inspire others through what I create. I explore femininity and its representation in relation to the intricacies of spirituality. The artwork I present on canvas may appear chaotic, yet it possesses a complexity that invites deeper examination. I aspire for my creations to reflect the intricacies of the female psyche. Through these works, I feel I can finally express my true self.

The Teaching Artist Residency program, in collaboration with Friends Life Community, has opened a chance to engage with fellow adults about the significance of exploring and experimenting with materials. Throughout this residency, I will provide each participant in the class with new materials to investigate and share their thoughts and emotions regarding these unfamiliar resources. These explorations will contribute to the development of a body of work that illustrates how new or unknown materials can integrate into our creative practices, leading to the production of more meaningful art.
