Meet teaching artist in residency: ✨

Hello! My name is Ciona, and I work with language for a living. As a poet, I especially love how language wells up within us and has to find its way out of us—in conversation, in various art forms and sometimes even in non-language ways—like a yell or giggle—that still manage to say a lot. At Friends Life, I get the opportunity to work with artists I’ve witnessed over the last few years. Every time I see their work, I realize that THESE are the artists EVERY Nashville artist needs to witness so that we can be reminded of the depth and breadth of our practice. We get to touch anew how art helps us inhabit these human skin vessels we’re in and maybe hurt less people while we’re here. Getting to work with the Friends who are poets, I’m even more convinced of this. We write collectively and individually, and I’m truly a learning artist in this space. Each time I step into the room with the Friends I learn more about what it means to celebrate one another’s existence. And every time I leave the Friends, I’ve learned a new way to enter language. It’s a poet’s dream!

The Teaching Artist in Residence program at Friends Life Community is a trimester-based opportunity that invites creative professionals from a wide range of disciplines to collaborate, create, and grow within an inclusive community. Teaching Artists work within a co-led class structure, using their preferred artistic modality to develop original work alongside Friends Life creatives. Throughout the semester, Teaching Artists in Residence share their creative journeys with adults with disabilities, supporting them in finding their voices, telling their stories, and connecting with others through shared creative experiences.
Performing & Visual Arts, Storytelling, Songwriting, Music, Poetry, and all of the above are welcomed!

We’re celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Week at FLC!

This week, we’re proud to recognize our 19 incredible weekly volunteers. Their time, dedication, and unique talents elevate everything we do—both within our walls and throughout the community.

With more than 24 hours of volunteer service each week, supporting classes, social clubs, and events, they make a lasting impact in countless ways. We feel truly grateful to know and love them, just as they’ve come to know and love the Friends we serve.

Every day, they help bring our mission to life and play a vital role in breaking down barriers across the Nashville community. “Thank you” hardly feels like enough.

The was truly moo-velous! With more than 1,500 runners on race day and an incredible wave of new community sponsors, we are deeply grateful to the Dairy Dash committee for championing the Friends and celebrating their stories and talents.

The morning kicked off with Friend Jimmy C. delivering a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, followed by remarks from Waverly Ann Harris, President & CEO, who spoke about FLC and the meaningful impact each attendee has on our mission. From there, the races were moo-ving as the Treat Truck and its ambassadors delighted participants with Purity Dairy treats, while Friends and their families lined the finish line, cheering on every runner.

The love and support we felt from the greater Nashville and Dairy Dash community is beyond what words can fully capture. Still, we want to express our heartfelt appreciation for the energy, generosity, and spirit shared this past Saturday. Here’s to a successful and unforgettable 2026 race day!

Lunch Bunch breakfast done right 🍞✨

Thick-cut French toast soaked in a cinnamon-vanilla egg mixture, cooked golden in butter, and topped with a warm homemade peach sauce 🍑

The sauce is simple and so good—sweet peaches simmered with brown sugar, cinnamon, butter, and a splash of vanilla until perfectly tender. Spoon it over your toast and you’re set.

Pro tip: let your bread sit out for a bit before dipping—it soaks up all that goodness even better.
