You may not know, when you are diagnosed with cancer, many times you are “assigned” your cancer team. And for some that is okay. For me, Vanderbilt gifted me with the crème de la creme! Except my plastic surgeon.

Did I think I needed to “shop around”? 100%.

Was I completely overwhelmed with all the referrals and choices and just the fact that I had cancer? Yes.

Did I find someone else? Nope.

And that is okay.

How did I know the plastic surgeon I was assigned was the wrong one? I didn’t feel like she cared about me.

I was going through cancer treatment. I was amputating my breasts. I was scared I would never look the same again. Never feel the same again. I was just SCARED. I felt like she couldn’t have cared less.

I had my first reconstruction with her. Expanders, filler. Then a second for implants and lipo/fat grafting.

The surgery went fine. They would look fine. They weren’t symmetrical but it was fine. There were dips in my chest but it was fine.

And then it wasn’t. It wasn’t okay that I just went through everything I did and had to be unhappy with my new prosthetic breasts. It was not okay, and that was okay.

Then I got a referral to Dr. Cash.

Right after meeting him, I wanted him on my team. He cared. He communicated. He complimented. He was kind. He explained. He had empathy. And the rest was history.

I am so happy with what Dr. Cash has done to fix the imperfections that had been created. He does impeccable work. This is truly art to him.

A cancer diagnosis is overwhelming. It’s hard and it’s heavy and there is so much to navigate. If you walk into any of your doctor’s offices and don’t feel good about the relationship, it’s okay. YOU have to do YOU and manage your health care provider choices.

And if you are in Nashville or the surrounding areas, are having reconstruction after mastectomy, and need a referral, I recommend Dr. Cash. 😁
