Society of NASA Flight Surgeons

Society of NASA Flight Surgeons This society is to advance the science, art, and identity of space medicine; document the historical achievements in operational space medicine.

The is an organization made up of individuals who have served as NASA flight surgeons or have served as a flight surgeon in operational support of human spaceflight space missions. The Society of NASA Flight Surgeons emblem depicts unity of aspiration and endeavor by all sharing the stated goals and objectives- human space exploration. It includes a gold winged motif symbolizing technology from aviation and space, as well as the Aesculapian staff entwined by the green serpent, traditional to medicine of the ages. The gold wing sweeps upward from the moon, symbolizing the aggregate efforts from Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs culminating in the historic lunar landing of astronauts. Other figures in the emblem include a toroidal space station, Mars, the five stars of the Southern Cross, and Earth's bright neighbors, Alpha and Beta Centauri, with Alpha being our nearest stellar system to our Sun's. Lastly is the Andromeda Nebula, flanked by two island galaxies looming as a cosmological wisp declaring its unsearchable mysteries open to the hopes and strivings of those who would know them or PER ASPERA AD ASTRA.

Internships are educational hands-on opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for educators and high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. To learn more, visit https://intern.nasa.gov.

The student placed in this position will assist the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) in supporting TRISH’s commercial spaceflight biomedical/biosample collection program.

TRISH is a lean, virtual institute empowered by the NASA Human Research Program to solve the challenges of human deep space exploration. TRISH relentlessly pursues and funds novel research to deliver high-impact scientific and technological solutions that advance space health and help humans thrive wherever they explore, in space or on Earth. To increase education, awareness, and engagement with TRISH, the intern will work closely with the TRISH communications team in assisting with various communications projects.

These projects include but are not limited to: biomedical data and biosample collection from commercial spaceflight participants; sustainment and support of hardware/software used in collection of data/samples from commercial spaceflight participants; management of the biomedical data and biosamples collected from commercial spaceflight participants; development and testing of procedures used in collection of biomedical data and biosamples from commercial spaceflight participants.

This is an in-person internship opportunity.

Closely monitoring Orion’s re-entry in Earth’s atmosphere and the end of Artemis’s long and record setting mission. I am doing this from home while my NASA colleagues actually work the mission. For the first time, only working with a crew live on ISS feels sorta like the second best thing for a NASA flight surgeon to be doing at the moment.
