The News
Emile Lygren

Each morning we listen for what is breaking–

the sound of a thousand tragedies fills the air,
shattering that never stops,
headlines, a fleet of anchors tangled at our feet.

We watch, worried
if we turn away even for an instant,
it will all crumble the rest of the way.

Forget with me for a moment.
Take an unguarded breath.
Do it now, the world needs your attention here, too,
on the rise and fall of your shoulders,
the rustle of leaves outside the window,
the warm space between your gaze and mine.

Three years ago today I took a leap of faith and opened my own small business, a private therapy practice. A few days later I got my first client, then a second, then a third. There's been a steady drum beat of amazing people sharing their lives with me and I could not be more grateful to have the best job on earth. And the best boss around, too 😉

Right about now is the time when HS Seniors have made their college decisions and are graduating. It's such an exciting time for a lot of folks! For others, they may know they’re going to take a gap year, no matter where they got in to college and they’re reflective about what their gap year will look like. And for still others, they know they aren’t going to opt for the traditional college route, but the day after graduation isn’t called anything specific…HS is ending and they’re not sure what they want to do next. Each of these folks are great referrals for me, because even though they’re all deciding different things, they are in transition and helping people through transitions is where I shine. I’m part therapist, part coach, and part adult who gets it. So a great referral for me is a HS senior / recent grad looking at their next steps.

Anxiety is really common. We’ve all experienced it. Some people live with it on occasion and some live with it every day to varying degrees and it can cause a great deal of suffering. Anxiety typically has two parts: 1) rapid worry thoughts and 2) some kind of physical discomfort - sweating, shaking, chest tightness, stomach upset, antsy. Fun fact - anxiety can’t live in a relaxed body. In therapy, we can ID those specific worry thoughts, how they’re paired with physical symptoms, and work on relaxation techniques. Without the physical tension, only the thoughts are left, not the anxiety. So relaxing the body is a real game changer to taking the wind out of the sails of anxiety and I can help people with that.

Along with Daylight Saving Time can be the onset of seasonal depression. Even if it’s not the Big D, a lot of people experience fatigue, lower motivation, general apathy…feeling blah. Therapy can be one of the first lines of defense against early signs of depression. Together we can tailor fit some interventions and strategies to nip it before it settles in.

Lately I've been talking with many of clients about their anxious anticipation of the holidays. Many people look forward to spending time with family over the holidays. Many others find consolidated time with immediate and extended family really stressful or even triggering. Talking with a therapist (like me) in anticipation of the holidays can be an effective way to plan ahead. We can talk about specific ways to get through it that might include... discussing the notion of not going at all and spending the holiday with friends. How to set boundaries. Preparatory scripting for handling conversations with those relatives who hold counter socio-political views. Creation of an exit strategy. Let's talk about how to get you through the holidays.

It’s that time of year where you may have Flex Spending Accounts or Health Savings Accounts that need to be spent or the money is lost. Well, I accept HSA & FSA as methods of payment and what a great way to invest in yourself…to talk through an adjustment or stress, to set goals, or to get some support making a career or life change.

What a great way to spend down your FSA or HSA in a way that can bring you immediate benefit and growth.
