We are so proud of Nekia Clark, Ellie Fund's Director of Community Engagement and Outreach, for sharing her personal experience with WBZ / CBS News Boston about the medical debt she incurred during her breast cancer treatment.

We stand with her in supporting Senator John J. Cronin's pending legislation, An Act Alleviating the burden of medical debt for patients and families. This bill would:
📝prohibit the reporting of medical debt on consumer credit reports,
📞provide protection against aggressive collection tactics,
📉 reduce interest rates on medical debt judgements📝

As pointed out by Health Care For All, medical expenses are often incurred voluntarily and unexpectedly. Patients deserved to be treated with dignity.

A new bill being introduced in the Massachusetts seeks to ban the sale of medical debt to debt collectors and stop it from impacting people's credit reports.

During Black History Month, we honor legacy by telling the full truth.

Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age.
More likely to face aggressive forms of the disease.
And 40% more likely to die, even with similar screening rates.

This disparity is not about biology alone.
It reflects differences in access, timely treatment, care coordination, and structural barriers within the healthcare system.

At Ellie Fund, equity is embedded in our work from direct patient support to coalition leadership focused on systemic change.

Awareness must lead to action.
Education must lead to access.
Equity must lead to outcomes.

Black History Month is a moment to speak truth about breast cancer disparities impacting Black women.

Black women face higher mortality rates, diagnoses at earlier ages, and barriers to care. Many of these inequities can be addressed through awareness, access, and community-centered support.

For 30 years, the Ellie Fund has worked to reduce barriers to treatment like transportation, food instability, and childcare by providing essential services that help patients focus on healing, not survival logistics.

Honoring Black history means continuing the work toward health equity.
