If you were told this, you were likely lied to.

Yes, even if your grandmother was told this, and then your mother, and then you. Just because someone said it doesn't make it true. It may have just made their job easier.

Except in cases where there has been previous damage to the pelvis (like broken bones from an accident) or a deformity (due to a disease like Rickets), your body WILL birth your baby if given enough time and the ability to move into the right positions (and, in rare cases, a little assistance).

When a provider says a pelvis is too small, they are usually referring to Cephalopelvic Disproportion (CPD). CPD means that a baby's head is too large to fit through the mother's pelvis. True CPD is incredibly rare and super difficult to determine.

Most of the time a diagnosis of CPD is given with absolutely no basis for the statement.

Once in a while a series of measurements called “pelvimetry” is used to determine the size of the pelvic outlet to see if the baby will fit. These measurements are basically useless, however, since they can’t account for the fact that your pelvis expands by up to 30% during birth, and your baby’s skull plates slide over one another to fit the space (forming a cone). You also can’t know a baby’s size before birth, since late term ultrasounds are notoriously inaccurate.

So, basically, they’re guessing.

More often than not, a diagnosis of CPD is due to lack of patience, an unnecessary induction, or other controllable circumstances. Many cases of “failure to progress” during labor are arbitrarily given a diagnosis of CPD.

Were you told that your pelvis was too small to birth your baby?

Spontaneous vaginal birth is associated with the best outcomes for mothers and babies. To which all the independent/private midwives say.....DUH.

Evidence shows that who provides your care might be the biggest predictor of your outcomes.

Private OBs had startlingly low rates of spontaneous labour,(8.2%) whereas private midwives had the highest (82.3%).

What an amazing opportunity! As a mother who lost a son to stillbirth, I can only imagine what it would have been like to be able to celebrate my next pregnancy in such beautiful way.

Matthew Bosarge wants to tell us homebirthers and midwives a few things. He is a MD in Mississippi. He was commenting on my post about research consistently that home birth has more vaginal births and fewer medical interventions. I thought I might give him his own post:
"Good midwives are aware of what makes a patient high risk and they tell those people to go to a OB for a hospital birth.
Being in a better place than others financially and being overall more fit and healthy reduces risk. Both of those factors tend to be in the same person and those people utilize midwives at higher rates than others.

Low risk births are fine at home.

Another thing we like to do is gas light obstetricians into acting like it’s all their fault. I’m sure there are plenty who intervene bc they just want to intervene but just remember that some lawyers have made their entire careers and millions of dollars suing as many ob’s as possible for cerebral palsy patients alleging that if for any amount of time a baby having late decelerations on the heart monitor caused brain damage and cerebral palsy
And any doctor who didn’t immediately cut that baby out could be sued at any time over the next 20 or so years and be blamed for that child’s brain damage. What we’ve found is 90% or more cerebral palsy have nothing to do with perinatal hypoxic events and were because of just random unfortunate circumstances during the pregnancy that were happening regardless

So 90% of John Edward’s money (famous for dying ob’s and making millions) shouldn’t be in his bank account.
I don’t imagine that midwives are held to the same standards as obs bc they can’t do what obs can to begin with and you knew that before committing to one.

So when they say they get better results it’s because they push all their bad stats on to the doctors from the start and if midwives were held to the same standard they’d likely cover their butts just as much with as many cya interventions

Just because people sue doesn’t mean it’s legit. Just because they scared a jury and win doesn’t mean they should’ve. But doctors still have to practice knowing people look for reasons to sue them legitimate or not.

✨ Midwifery care should feel accessible, not out of reach.

Every family deserves the opportunity to choose care that feels aligned with their values. Accepting BadgerCare helps open that door for families who want midwifery-led care but previously thought it might not be possible.

🌿 A logo that feels more aligned 🌿
When I first started Fox Valley Midwifery, my original logo was put together quickly - simply so I could get my practice off the ground and begin serving families. It did its job, but as this practice has grown I wanted something that reflected not just where I practice, but why I do this work. This new logo was created with a lot of thought, care, and many subtle changes - small details that carry deeper meaning.

The fox is obviously a nod to the Fox Valley, but it also represents so much more to me - it symbolizes intuition, wisdom, and trust in natural instincts - qualities that are deeply important to birth. The fox curled around and the baby held close represents the quiet, protected space I hope to create for families. To me, it reflects the way midwifery care should feel: steady, respectful, and quietly protective.

And the flowers… those are deeply personal. The larger blooms represent my three living children. The smaller blooms honor my son who was stillborn and my nephew who died shortly after birth. They are all part of who I am as a midwife, and the heart behind this practice. Their lives continue to shape the way I hold this work - with humility, intention, and deep reverence for every family’s story.

Thank you for being here as this practice continues to grow and evolve alongside the families I serve. 🤍

5 years ago I go to document this beautiful birth, working alongside this amazing midwife. I’m shocked it’s been so long! I am so grateful for the years I got to spend as a doula and birth photographer, and I am grateful that I still occasionally get to step out of my midwife shoes and photograph births. Keep your eyes open for some fresh photos soon!

There is something a bit extra special about catching the sibling of a previous mini-client. I’ve grown to love this family so much and am so humbled to be there midwife for a second time! Welcome to their newest addition, a surprise baby boy named Lincoln. The baby that put his momma through 2 whole more weeks of pregnancy and weighed an entire 12 ounces bigger than his elder brother! We’re so happy to meet you!

The first baby of the new year, and the first baby of Fox Valley Midwifery.
After months of heartbreak, stretching, and deep growth, this little one arrived and marked a beginning I will never forget. Their journey was not simple or easy, but it was held with courage, intention, and so much support.
I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for a healthy baby, and a recovering mother. This birth reminds me that new beginnings are often born through complexity- and that growth is rarely quiet.
These first inked footprints mark the beginning of a brave new path, proof that even the smallest steps can open an entirely new way forward.

I’m stepping into this year with a humbled heart, renewed purpose, and deep trust in the work ahead. 👣✨

✨ Modern Home Birth Midwifery ✨

If you’re pregnant and exploring your birth options in the Fox Valley, you may be wondering what actually supports safe, healthy outcomes – for you and your baby.
For most of human history, birth happened at home with skilled midwives supporting the natural process of labor. Today, research continues to show that for healthy, low-risk pregnancies, fewer routine interventions and more continuous, individualized support is linked with improved outcomes for both mothers and babies.

As a licensed home birth midwife new to practicing in Wisconsin, I blend traditional midwifery skills with modern, evidence-based care – using tools like IV therapy, oxygen, and medications when they’re truly needed, while protecting the normal physiology of birth whenever possible.
I recently shared a little about the history of home birth midwifery, how it has evolved, and what modern home birth care looks like today – especially here in our local community.
