Today we remember, honor and thank Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his life’s work and philosophy for a peaceful approach to the civil rights movement. First observed in 1986, this federal holiday was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, and to encourage all Americans to make their communities a better place. From leading the Montgomery (Alabama) Bus Boycott in 1955 to the “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963, and culminating in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, MLK dedicated his life to making our nation a better place.
