🩸Farmers understood the importance of leaving a field uncultivated for a period of time to replenish lost nutrients. We all need fallow periods of restoration too, time to slow down, nurture our bodies and let ourselves rest, especially when we are on our period. To assist our wombs in a full uterine cleanse requires prioritizing our needs over everyone else’s, even when our culture wants us to keep going. If we go about our schedule with no rest or care during this time, imbalances may occur. Uncomfortable feelings of laziness and guilt appear while I rest, like I ought to be doing something. I know that if I don’t rest while menstruating, I will be resentful and exhausted on all levels. I found that if I honor my moon time, my symptoms of cramping, back ache, migraines, exhaustion and crying decrease.
🩸The body takes nutrients and energy to produce more blood, so prioritize rest for the first four days of menstruation. Avoid exerting yourself and rigorous exercise.
🩸Cold food and drinks can be harder to digest, because they cause stagnation and blood to clot, which increases cramps when your uterus tries to flush them out. Keeping the abdomen warm and eating hot, easy to digest cooked foods supports good circulation and blood flow to the womb. It is important to rebuild your blood with nurturing nutrient rich foods like oatmeal, bone broths, warm soups, cooked leafy greens, seaweed, salmon and protein rich animal meats.
🩸Shedding excess blood requires more water, so stay hydrated babe! Tea has great medicinal properties. Hibiscus tea is lovely for clearing out old residue in the uterus. Dandelion and nettle tea give the blood nutrients and ginger tea is great for promoting circulation and digestion.
🩸Avoid and body inversions. Avoid plugging your natural flow with tampons or menstrual cups because they make it harder for your womb to clean out old residue and clots. You can free bleed into reusable pads or period panties instead. My favorite chemical free period underwear are from periodaisle.com
🩸What are your favorite practices and meals while you are bleeding? If you don’t bleed, how do you slow down and care for yourself?
