My journey to Anew Day started a long time ago. I’ve been drawn to the field of psychology for as long as I can remember. Between having two parents who have master’s in counseling and my fascination in trying to understand people, it’s no wonder that I decided to become a therapist.

I first came to Nevada County shortly after completing my bachelor’s in psychology. As I was finishing up my last year at California Baptist University, I had no idea what I was supposed to do next. I was praying constantly, feeling conflicted because I didn’t feel like God was telling me to go to graduate school yet.

“Why aren’t you giving me a direction, God?” I prayed. “I really need to figure this out.” God answered that prayer in the form of an internship at Christian Encounter Ranch in Grass Valley. As soon as I heard about it, I knew it was what God had for me next. I have never felt so sure of God’s direction before. I came to Christian Encounter Ranch trusting that God had a plan for me, that helped me overcome my anxiety about moving four hundred miles away. While completing my internship, I discovered what it really meant to love like Christ, putting aside personal difficulties to serve others and show them what it really meant to love unconditionally. I grew so much during that time and had a new perspective on dealing with mental health when I started my graduate program.

After completing my clinical psychology master’s program in May, I found myself in a similar place: wondering where I was going next. Yet, all of it made sense when I realized He was calling me back to Nevada County, to a community I had grown to love during my time at Christian Encounter. I am so excited to be at Anew Day utilizing all that I learned in school and at Christian Encounter Ranch to serve and connect further with the Nevada County community that is already feeling like home.

There are many different ways that we express ourselves. From a young age, we learn to communicate through language, but we often struggle to put exactly what we mean into words. In our Let Your HeART Speak art workshop, participants are given a space to express themselves through creativity and art. As children, art comes as naturally as breathing. Children aren’t worried about how their art may be judged but rather use it as a pure expression of self. As adults, this process becomes much more difficult.

We often judge ourselves harshly, critiquing the product rather than embracing the process. But life is messy, and we honor that part of ourselves through what we create. Participants are often surprised that they are given permission to be messy. To be told that things don’t have to be perfect, they can simply be. In creating this space, facilitators marvel at what clients can create.

“We set the table and watch them discover their own healing,” one facilitator stated. “Then we watch the healing happen before our eyes. It’s been such an amazing experience.”

Often, the practice of putting an experience into art and then explaining the creation has a profound impact for participants. Art and the practice of creating art can help individuals to look at situations from a different perspective. The product and experience that each participant experiences varies greatly. It is not about creating a specific product, but about each person producing something that is true to themselves. The acceptance of ourselves and the beauty of what they can create is life-giving and deeply meaningful to many of the participants.

We have been proud to hold four Let Your Heart Speak groups over the course of this past year and we look forward to offering the next series of this group starting in January 2026. You can register at www.anew-day.com/art

We need your support! As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, your donations make a world of difference. From one-time donations to monthly contributions, or even stocks and wills, every little bit helps us continue our mission.

SUPPORT MONTHLY
Monthly donors are our bread and butter. They supply the dependable revenue needed to pay our bills. These recurring payments can easily be set up through your bank, our website, or by calling our office.

SPECIFIC FUNDS
Anew Day has two specific funds that you can donate to. Our First Responder Support Fund provides trauma-informed professional therapy to our local First Responders free of cost. Secondly, our Childrens Scholarship provides professional therapy for minors free of charge.

GIVE ONE TIME
Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and are needed to cover operational costs that monthly support does not. No amount is too small and all donations are greatly appreciated!

DONATE GOODS & SERVICES
If you own/manage a business that supplies goods or services that might be helpful to Anew Day, in-kind donations can be terrific, and their value is tax deductible. Even a store discount would be greatly appreciated.

ESTATE PLANNING
Many people remember charitable organizations in their wills and trusts. We would be very grateful if you considered adding Anew Day to your estate planning.

Every week, people call us in search of support for all manner of emotional and mental health needs. Few have insurance and so many cannot afford private care. They’re hurting, anxious, grieving, or simply overwhelmed. Maybe they’re dealing with depression and anxiety, or the loss of a loved one, or the pressures of life that feel unbearable. When they reach out, they’re not just looking for a service, they’re looking for hope.

And because of you, we get to tell them, “Yes, we can meet with you. Yes, we’re here for you.”

That single word "yes" carries immense power. It opens doors for those in distress and bridges the gap between pain and healing, despair and hope. Just the other day, one of our clinicians said, “I have the privilege of saying yes.” I believe it truly is a privilege. A privilege that is made possible because so many faithful volunteers, donors, and clinicians unite to make free counseling and affordable therapy available to those who are hurting.

As I reflect on what Anew Day does as an organization, when we say our collective “yes” to so many who suffer, I am reminded of what Paul wrote: “For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Every time we say yes to someone in need, we are joining in a far greater Yes, the assurance that no one is forgotten, that every life has worth, and that light can reach even the darkest places.

Because of the generosity shown to Anew Day by so many, we can open our doors to each person who knocks and say yes over and over again. People in crisis don’t have to walk alone, they have companions on their journey, and a community that cares deeply for them.

Thank you for making it possible for Anew Day to say yes. To donate to Anew Day: www.anew-day.com/give

Fall is a time of transition. As the weather grows colder, we get back into cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice, hot cocoa, and watch the leaves turn red and gold. However, these aren’t the only transitions that occur during this time. As the warmth of summer turns into the coziness of fall, another major transition occurs: the return to school.

School is such a normal part of life that it can be easy to forget the stress that can come along with it. For many families, this season is a mix of the excitement of new beginnings and the pressure of expectations. A study conducted by the CDC found that visits to the emergency room for mental health related issues, such as depression, suicidal ideation, and substance use disorders increased in children aged 10-17 as the school year begins. The finding suggests that there is an increase in adolescents that coincides with the start of school. In addition, the World Health Organization reports that 1 in 7 teens struggle with a mental health disorder, making back-to-school time even more challenging for many students.

And the return to school doesn’t only affect children. Parents often juggle packed schedules, transportation logistics, and help with homework, all while trying to maintain a sense of balance at home. Meanwhile, children are handling academic pressure, learning to manage new teachers and getting back into extracurriculars. Add in the challenges of maintaining friendships and coping with social dynamics, and it’s no wonder that many students feel overwhelmed. The constant push to meet expectations can lead to emotional exhaustion, for both children and parents.

For families living in rural areas, like much of Nevada County, these challenges can be even more difficult to manage. Rural communities face additional boundaries to accessing mental health care that include a shortage of providers, limited transportation options and fewer specialized services. These barriers mean that many children, teens and parents who are struggling may go without the support they need. Without intervention, emotional distress can deepen over time, making access to care more important than ever.

At Anew Day, we understand that the transition back to school can be a difficult time. Over the years, we’ve worked with countless children, teens, and parents who face the challenges of this season. Whether it’s academic stress, social anxiety, or difficulties managing emotional health, we’re here to help. Our goal is to offer compassionate support to families who are navigating the complexities of school-related stress. We provide free counseling and affordable therapy to anyone in need of hope and healing.

You don’t need to navigate the pressures of back-to-school alone. At Anew Day, we are dedicated to helping families not just survive this season but truly thrive. Your donation to Anew Day helps us continue to provide much needed support to families who are struggling in these times. Donate at www.anew-day.com/give
