Before Story Medical was opened in 1951, healthcare in Story County looked very different. In 1909, the Iowa Sanitarium opened in Nevada, serving as one of the area’s earliest sources of hospital care.

Operated by the Seventh Day Adventists, the 40-bed facility focused on disease prevention and overall health — a forward-thinking approach for its time. For years, it was the closest hospital option for many families in Story County and surrounding communities, laying the groundwork for local care close to home.
