In 1970, Story County Hospital launched its own ambulance service — a major step forward for emergency care in our community.

Prior to that time, local funeral directors often filled the gap when organized emergency response systems didn’t yet exist. They weren’t medical professionals, but they understood urgency and compassion.

As emergency medicine evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, new standards required trained EMTs and fully equipped ambulances, establishing the foundation for what is now our Mobile Intensive Care Services.

It didn't take long for Story County Hospital to establish itself as a quality care provider after opening its doors in 1951. By the early 1960s it was clear that an expansion was needed.

The hospital completed its first long-term care addition in 1969, funded in large part by a $154,000 donation from Reine Wells. In 1977, a $400,000 gift from Edith Robison funded a second-floor long-term care addition and chapel.

With the long-term care additions, the hospital’s main entrance moved from the east to the south side, where it remained until the building was vacated in 2024.

We were excited to host a group of public safety professionals last week to discuss the unique life and fire safety issues presented by our new on-site MRI. Because the MRI makes use of a massive magnet, traditional procedures in the case of a fire or medical emergency need to be modified.

We couldn't have been more impressed by the engagement from the teams at the Nevada Fire Department and Nevada Iowa Police Department. We feel fortunate to serve this community alongside them.

When it opened to the public on September 10, 1951 the new Story County Hospital offered 52 beds. As noted above in a City Council memo, the hospital anchored an area just south of downtown Nevada that had been known for nearly a century as "South Park". The final cost of the hospital was just short of $300,000.
