Project at Story Medical ushers in new permanent MRI designed for comfort, convenience of patients
Story Medical has taken another major step forward in expanding healthcare access for the community with the addition of a permanent, state-of-the-art MRI suite now in operation on campus.
For more than a decade, a mobile MRI trailer served Story County patients well, allowing residents to receive advanced imaging locally rather than traveling out of town. But the new permanent installation significantly expands access, availability, and coordination of care.
“Installing a fixed MRI is a strategic investment in our community’s health,” says Nate Thompson, CEO of Story Medical. “It means convenient access to advanced imaging technology without leaving town — something our patients and providers have long hoped for.”
The Gold Standard
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is widely considered the gold standard for evaluating soft tissue in the body. Unlike X-ray or CT scans, which use ionizing radiation, MRI relies on powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed, cross-sectional images. These images help physicians diagnose conditions involving the brain, spinal cord, joints, abdominal organs, and blood vessels.
Common MRI studies include scans for stroke or neurological concerns, sports injuries affecting the knee or shoulder, spinal issues such as disc disease, and abdominal or vascular imaging.
The new MRI suite sits just steps from Story Medical’s Emergency Department and inpatient unit. The expanded area also includes a new CT scanner (see story below), comfortable suites for patients, a larger work area for the radiology team, and more.
“Our technologists have always delivered excellent imaging,” says Lance Ackerman, Director of Radiology. “But having the MRI under our own roof gives us greater flexibility. We can offer same-day or next-day appointments if needed.”
Patient Comfort a Priority
Everything in the new area is designed with patient comfort in mind. Specifically, the MRI features a wide-bore design with a shorter tunnel to reduce feelings of claustrophobia, along with lighting and music options to create a more relaxing experience.
The new machine also includes an in-bore entertainment system, which allows patients to watch videos or listen to music during their exam. A specially designed mirror and display create the impression of a larger space inside the scanner, while noise-reducing headphones improve comfort and communication with technologists.
Together with existing services such as CT scanning, digital X-ray, ultrasound, and bone density testing, the MRI strengthens Story Medical’s comprehensive imaging capabilities.
For Thompson, the new technology reflects a simple goal: ensuring patients can access high-quality care close to home.
“Our vision is delivering advanced healthcare with compassion right here in Story County,” he says. “This MRI allows us to remove barriers of travel and time, giving patients quicker answers and helping providers deliver the best possible care.”
