Here’s why we need to keep it moving!!

Movement matters throughout the day! Here's an excerpt from Rip's book on what happens when we hit "play next episode."

After sitting for more than an hour, your body halts production of the fat-burning enzyme lipase by as much as 90 percent. This slows down the rate at which glucose is metabolized and lowers levels of HDL—“the good”—cholesterol.

Your blood sugar rises, your muscles tighten, and the muscles in your legs don’t sufficiently contract to send blood back up to your heart. As a result, excess blood pools in your legs, your cells clump together, and circulation slows.

You start feeling tired—that’s because your body is no longer producing enough insulin to ferry glucose to your muscles. Then you feel hungry, even if you just ate—this is because the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin are completely out of whack.

You eat more, you move less, and a vicious cycle ensues.

It's important to 'snack' on exercise throughout the day! Take a quick walk around the block. Do squats after an episode on Netflix. Do 30 jumping jacks after you brush your teeth. Set a timer on your phone to remind you to do 15 squats throughout the day. Daily habits can help you stop the cycle.

It’s important to understand that those food cravings are not a “will power” problem but an addictive food problem!

It’s always the food. Always.

According to a recent The New York Times article summarizing current research, certain foods are “especially likely to elicit ‘addictive-like’ eating behaviors, such as intense cravings, a loss of control, and an inability to cut back despite experiencing harmful consequences and a strong desire to stop eating them.”

You’re not broken for being tempted by these highly processed foods and being biologically adapted to eat enough as a survival advantage.

This is one of the myriad advantages of sticking with a diet based on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices in infinite tasty combinations, as these foods don’t offer that same dopamine hit as those that are stripped of nutrients and then additionally adulterated with oils, sugars, salts, flours, etc. to make them hyperpalatable.

Most importantly, we can arm ourselves with peace knowing there isn’t something wrong with us for desiring those foods and not being able to stop eating them once we start. ✌🏼☮️💜
