🌟 Employee Spotlight: Sandra Taylor – Business Office Coordinator

Born in Sea Level, NC and raised in Harker’s Island, Sandra Taylor truly has a little extra salt in her blood! She loves the beach, the ocean, and that warm, salty air that always feels like home.

Sandra is a devoted mother to a 28-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son, and a proud grandmother to one beautiful granddaughter. She also shares the loving responsibility of caring for her mother alongside her twin sister. Her family is her heart and soul.

A woman of many talents, Sandra shines both inside and outside the office. She’s an exceptional baker and cake decorator — even crafting her own wedding cake! She also loves sewing and creating clothing, a skill passed down from her mother. Her creativity extends to DIY art projects made from wood, shells, and other natural materials. She’s even sold some of her handmade creations and dreams of one day owning a small shop where she can share her beautiful art with others.

Sandra earned an associate degree as a Legal Secretary and has taken additional courses in Business Administration and Medical Terminology at Carteret Community College. Before joining The Viridian, she gained 14 years of experience in retail and hotel management. Sandra began her journey here in May 2023 as a Concierge and quickly advanced to her current role as Business Office Coordinator.

In her day-to-day work, Sandra handles vital operations including payroll, resident contracts, human resources, and employee files. But her impact goes far beyond paperwork — she brings warmth, compassion, and genuine care to everything she does. Her love for seniors shines brightly, reflecting her deeply held Christian belief that ā€œGod made us all equal. Let us treat and love each other as such.ā€

And if all that weren’t enough, Sandra and her twin sister are gifted singers — with voices as beautiful as their hearts.

We’re so thankful to have Sandra as part of The Viridian family, where her kindness, creativity, and joyful spirit make a difference every single day. šŸ’š

🌟 Steve Mabie – Transportation Specialist - The Viridian Independent & Assisted Living

Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and Stanton, Virginia, Steve Mabie brings both heart and history to The Viridian. A graduate of Buffalo Gap High School and James Madison University, Steve earned degrees in History, Social Studies, Government, and World Geography.

In 1976, Steve met and married the love of his life, Susan, and together they have one daughter and two wonderful grandchildren, ages 20 and 14.

Steve began his career as a teacher before life led him down a new path in sales—first with Hubble, then Air Flow for 15 years, and finally with Grainger, the company that brought him to New Bern. After retiring in 2020, Steve spent two years checking off honey-do lists and enjoying home projects before deciding he needed something more. In 2022, we were fortunate to welcome him to The Viridian, where he now shines as our Transportation Specialist, safely escorting residents to appointments and outings.

But Steve is far more than ā€œthe guy who drives you places.ā€ Since 2008, he has served as a lay pastor at his church, and since joining The Viridian, he’s shared that same calling here—leading Sunday worship services and memorials. He also tends to our courtyard gardens, is helping repair the front pond fountain, and is always ready with a kind word, a warm hug, or a prayer when someone needs it most. His selflessness and genuine compassion are felt throughout our community every day.

Beyond The Viridian, Steve continues to serve the wider New Bern community through his work with the Faith Connection of New Bern, Religious Community Services (RCS), and The Crop Hunger Walk with Church World Service (CWS). Through these organizations, he helps feed those facing food insecurity and supports homeless individuals, families, and veterans in need.

When he’s not volunteering or on the road with residents, you’ll find Steve cheering for his favorite teams—the New York Yankees and Carolina Panthers—and spending treasured time with his grandchildren.

We couldn’t be prouder or more honored to have Steve as part of our Viridian family. He is a living example of how kindness, faith, and love can truly make a difference in the lives of others.

🌟 Susie Myers – Lifestyle Program Director, Independent Living

Born in Lakeland, Florida and raised in Parker, Pennsylvania, Susie Myers has always had a special place in her heart for seniors. From the time she was 12 years old, she spent her summers at her cousin’s personal care home (where her mother worked)—entertaining residents, helping with meals, and enjoying puzzles and games. Known for her ā€œold soul,ā€ Susie always preferred the company of seniors—and that passion shaped the course of her life. She became a CNA at 16 and has worked on and off with seniors for over 30 years.

Susie joined The Viridian in July 2024 as a cook, where she quickly won over residents with her warm personality and her habit of singing while serving meals. When the Lifestyle Program Director role opened just six months later, residents themselves encouraged her to apply. After creating a mock event for her interview, she was offered the position on the spot—a true testament to her creativity, passion, and connection with the community. Susie brings a wealth of skill to her work, but it’s her heart that shines the brightest. She often says she prayed for years for God to place her where she could make a difference in the lives of others—never realizing just how deeply those same people would enrich her life in return.

Here at The Viridian, residents especially love Susie’s lively spirit at happy hours, where she sings, dances, and tells jokes while serving wine and handcrafted cocktails. But what truly sets Susie apart is how far she goes for others. She’s more than just an Activities Director—she’s a friend, helper, and honorary family member to many. ā€œJack of all tradesā€ is the perfect description—but around here, most simply call her a blessing. Outside of work, Susie enjoys kayaking, crafting, painting and—always—singing!

Whether she’s belting out a tune, sharing one of her famous hugs, or simply making someone smile, Susie lives every day with music in her heart and joy in her spirit. We are grateful to have her leading our Lifestyle Programs and filling The Viridian with laughter, song, and love.
