City of New Bern to Host Free COVID-19 Testing Events

Monday, December 7, 2020: 11am-3pm at Lawson Creek Park, 1309 Country Club Road

Monday, December 14, 2020: 11am-3pm at West New Bern Recreation Center, 1225 Pinetree Drive

Wednesday, December 16, 2020: 11am-3pm at Henderson Park, 901 Chapman Street

Thanks to state and federal funding there is no cost to have a COVID-19 test. The North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services (NCDHHS) has partnered with the North Carolina Community Health Center Association to provide COVID-19 testing in communities where it is most needed. Greene County Health Care, Inc. (GCHC) is a member of the NC Community Health Center Association and they will facilitate and administer the COVID tests at all three New Bern sites.

GCHC testing technicians will use polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, test kits to swab nasal passages. Participants will not need to get out of their cars; however, walk-up testing is also available for pedestrians. PCR tests detect the presence of the virus's genetic material and are known to be highly accurate for positive cases. GCHC will secure collection devices and coordinate with a lab for testing. It could take several days up to a week to receive results.

Participants who test positive for COVID-19 will be contacted by the Craven County Health Department and given further instructions. People should be sure to answer the call when the health department’s COVID-19 team reaches out. They will get a phone call from either “Craven County Offices” on their Caller ID or the phone number (844)628-7223. Participants who test negative will be contacted by Greene County Health Care, Inc.

The NC Department of Health & Human Services strongly advises North Carolinians to stay safe and get tested for COVID-19, especially with the holiday season upon us and the many situations in which we may be around other people, such as holiday gatherings, shopping, travel, etc. If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, were exposed to someone with COVID-19, or you suspect you may have been exposed to COVID-19, you should stay home and avoid others (including those in your household) until you receive your test results. North Carolinians are reminded to follow the three W’s to reduce COVID exposure and transmission: Wear a mask; Wait 6 feet apart and avoid close contact; and Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer.

Masks are mandatory at all three testing events. There will be masks available on site. Pedestrians are reminded to remain at least 6 feet apart while waiting in line.

The American Dental Association (ADA) respectfully yet strongly disagrees with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation to delay “routine” dental care in certain situations due to COVID-19.

Dear Family of Patients,

I hope that this communication comes to you in the comfort of your homes. As of Tuesday 03/17 we at NBFD finished treating our patients scheduled that day for mostly emergent dental care. We are now only open for emergency dental needs. We will be triaging those in need virtually. So if you have dental pain or an emergent dental issue you can call our pager system and follow the instructions to reach us (252-497-2871). Routine issues of scheduling should be directed to 252-633-2207. Our current goal is to take care of true dental emergencies so that our medical colleagues are free to do what they do best.

We will update you on our progress towards reopening. With optimism we are aiming for 04/06/2020 as the date we can resume some maintenance and restorative dental care. For the time being I am preparing for our return.

Never in my history on this earth have a felt as strongly that we as individuals can have a worldwide impact with our local actions. Choosing to truly self isolate and social distance when we do go out can REALLY help...it can help you, your neighbor and your even farther away neighbors!

I want to take a moment to thank my coworkers my staff for the phenomenal work they have been doing to support our dental practice over the past several weeks leading up to today. Our early response can be credited to the evidence based recommendations of my staff. The efficiency and detailed attention to thoughtful rescheduling and triage efforts...also credited to my coworkers. Those are only a few of the things that have happened in the background that have kept me proud of the level of safety of our dental office. I have always taken quiet pride in being surrounded by folks that choose to come work with me everyday. I have secretly delighted in the compassion, level of knowledge, and just good old fashion smarts I have been blessed to be surrounded by as I try myself to do the best job I can every day.

My faith tells me to trust and be mindful. Though most of us have not lived through a time like this our parents or our grandparents have. We live in a country that despite faults and missteps has always prevailed over our circumstances. That I believe comes from a legacy in this country of self starters and resiliency unmatched. It is embedded in our blood and family traditions ever how distant that specific reference is in our individual consciousness.

Over the next few weeks we will be posting or reaching out through social media. Until then you can imagine that my advice is...as always...put down that sugary snack...go wash your hands, floss thoroughly and brush your teeth!!

In this changing world know that some things just never change!!👩‍⚕️🦷

Sincerely Yours,
Dr. Gong and Your Dental Team at New Bern Family Dentistry
