The day brought us to the steps of the beautiful, historic Centenary United Methodist Church in downtown New Bern, where we gathered to serve a family saying goodbye to a man who had given so much of himself to others—an Air Force veteran, a former River Bend town councilman, a Rotarian, a devoted community servant, and above all, a family man.
As we moved through the quiet rhythm of the day, something simple caught our eye. Just beyond the steps, surrounded by bright blooms and warmed by the sun, a small sign stood with a message that felt almost placed there just for this moment:
“Love thy neighbor.”
It landed differently in that space—less like a phrase and more like a reflection of the life we were there to honor. A life lived in service, in kindness, in commitment to others. In that stillness, it felt like both a reminder and a legacy—softly echoing the very way he chose to move through the world. In loving memory of our friend, Bud Van Slyke.
