This book is a staple on a lot of therapists’ shelves for a reason.

"Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents" by Lindsay C. Gibson PsyD helps put language to experiences many people feel but haven’t been able to name—especially around family dynamics, unmet emotional needs, and why certain interactions still feel so charged.

At Riverbend, we often recommend this one because it:
👉 Helps you understand patterns (without villainizing anyone)
👉 Clarifies what is and isn’t your responsibility
👉 Supports healthier boundaries rooted in reality, not guilt
👉 Encourages acceptance without asking you to excuse harmful behavior

Sometimes insight doesn’t change the past...but it can change how you move through the room. 🌿

Valentine’s Day can be a beautiful reminder of connection. But connection doesn’t only mean romantic relationships.

It can also be a moment to notice where care already exists in your life: the people who show up, the boundaries you’ve built, the ways you've learned to support yourself over time. Love isn’t limited to one day or one type of relationship.

Send this to someone you appreciate—or save it for yourself as a reminder. 💙

Not every Valentine’s Day needs to be a whole thing. Ya know? 😝

Staying in, grabbing takeout, laughing it off, or making other plans that actually feel good all count. There’s no right way to do this day—just the way that feels the most loving to you. 💛

We offer free sensory stickers at our front desk for anyone who wants them! ✨

They’re small, tactile tools designed to support grounding and nervous system regulation—especially in moments of stress, overwhelm, or emotional intensity.

Take them home, stick them on a water bottle, notebook, phone case, or anywhere you’ll see and feel them. They’re here as a simple reminder that support doesn’t always have to be complicated.

Free. Always available. For anyone who needs them. Grab one next time you come in! 🌿

When old patterns tell you to stay small or push through, self-compassion can feel unfamiliar.

But noticing those patterns is the beginning of real change. You don’t have to navigate that work alone.

If you’re ready to understand yourself with more clarity and less criticism, Riverbend is here to walk with you.

We’re always looking for ways to better support our community and offer groups that are actually helpful and relevant.

We currently offer an OCD support group and an anger management group, and we’re exploring additional group options for the coming months. We’d love your input.

Pop psychology has made boundaries sound sharp, fast, and final.
But real-life boundaries tend to be slower, messier, and more relational.

Healthy boundaries aren’t about shutting people out the moment something feels uncomfortable. They’re about being honest, staying grounded, and figuring out what protects your well-being while still allowing connection when it’s safe to do so.

Sometimes boundaries mean distance.
Sometimes they mean staying and doing things differently.
Most of the time, they take practice.

If you set intentions this year around “better boundaries,” this is the kind that actually holds up in real relationships.

Save this for when the internet makes it feel simpler than it is.

Reminder: emotional information doesn’t just live in your head 🧠
Often, it shows up in your body first.

A tight chest. Shallow breathing. The urge to speed up or shut down.
Those reactions are often signals, even when the words aren’t there yet.

Noticing them can slow things down in a useful way. There’s no need to fix or analyze it right away.
Just noticing, with a little curiosity, can be enough ✨

A lot of people think being self-aware means you can explain your emotions really well.

But that’s not always self-awareness...sometimes, it’s intellectualizing (AKA another way to avoid feeling your emotions and letting them move through you).

Intellectualizing is when you understand your feelings without actually letting yourself feel them. You can name the pattern. You know where it came from. You can explain why it makes sense. AND still stay a little disconnected from the emotion itself.

And honestly? It's often a really smart coping strategy.

The problem is when all that insight becomes another way to stay at arm’s length from what you feel.

Self-awareness is both. Knowing what’s happening and letting yourself sit with it, even when it’s uncomfortable.🤍
