Why the name- “Back Porch Therapy”?

It’s the kind of relaxed, open environment you’d experience if you were talking out your problems with a close friend. God gave my husband the idea for this name after I counseled a friend in crisis on our back porch on evening. After an hour or two of visiting on our back porch, he was able to move forward with new hope and a plan.

Having the courage to acquire mental health care carries a social stigma. People often share with me that “maybe if I wasn’t so weak, I could get through this problem by myself”. Some of my friends might remember me when I was much younger and, frankly, terrified of receiving medication for depression, or receiving counseling services. I was... you.

Over time, I learned that therapy wasn’t a scary word, but a foundation of recovery for my mental health. With my faith in God, the support of my beautiful family and friends, and the recent opening of my own Therapy practice, I hope to help remove the stigma attached to “asking for help”.
