🏥💼 Supporting care behind the scenes.

At the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, two Favarh Work Crews play an important role in helping the hospital run smoothly each day.

One crew works in the cafeteria kitchen, assisting with kitchen operations that help keep meals moving to staff and visitors. Another crew helps maintain patient rooms, ensuring clean, orderly spaces that support a safe and comfortable healing environment.

These roles require reliability, attention to detail, and teamwork—qualities our crews bring to work every day. Through partnerships like this, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are building valuable workplace skills while contributing to an organization dedicated to care and recovery.

It’s meaningful work that supports a vital community institution.

If you want to hire a Favarh crew, give us a call. Visit out website favarh.org

Today is Rare Disease Day, a day set aside to raise awareness and generate change for the 300 million people worldwide living with one.

Rare Diseases by the numbers:
🌎3.5 - 5.9% of the world's population lives with a rare disease
🧬72% of rare diseases are genetic diseases

Due to the wide diversity of rare disorders and the presence of relatively common symptoms that can mask an underlying rare disease, misdiagnosis is common. Moreover, symptoms not only vary between different diseases but can also differ among patients with the same condition.

Living with a rare disease is complex, but care shouldn’t be. At HFSC's Neuromuscular Center, patients receive expert, multidisciplinary care at Connecticut’s most comprehensive center, supported by research and clinical trials. Above all, we lead with compassion, equity, and hope — from diagnosis through every stage of the journey. ✨

At Hospital for Special Care, therapeutic recreation is a critical component of comprehensive brain injury care. We are proud to be a session sponsor of Brain Injury Alliance of Connecticut (BIAC)'s 2026 Annual Professional Conference, taking place March 6, with Terri Larson, CTRS, HFSC's Therapeutic Recreation practice manager, and Dr. MaryJo Archambault, presenting “Reconnecting Lives: The Critical Role of Recreational Therapy in Interdisciplinary ABI Care”.

After an acquired brain injury, over 90% of individuals experience a significant decline in meaningful leisure and community participation, increasing the risk of isolation and reduced quality of life. TR is an evidence-based clinical service that uses meaningful, goal-driven activities to strengthen executive functioning, rebuild confidence, and support community reintegration. It bridges the gap between clinical care and real life—helping people return to what gives them purpose.

We're sharing our gratitude to Kelser Corporation for their incredible gift of $58,000.00 to our Center for Cognitive Health, raised from the proceeds of their annual Kelser Charity Challenge Golf Tournament! Their generosity benefits our patients living with cognitive impairment and aging brain health diseases, allowing us to elevate our care offerings and increase quality of life.

Meet the Artist: Racquel Miller 🎨
Racquel is a self-taught artist, guided not by formal instruction but by intuition and a willingness to explore. She works primarily with professional-grade acrylics on heavy-duty, gallery-wrapped canvas, building layers that evoke both tranquility and vitality.

Since 2020, Racquel has embraced abstract art as a joyful exploration—a way to capture the essence of a moment or a memory rather than its literal form. Her paintings invite you to pause, to breathe, and to reconnect with the natural world.

Apart from being an artist, Racquel is a wife and mother of three boys. She balances her creative practice with a career as an employment coordinator. Through her art, Racquel hopes to offer a moment of peace—a reminder that beauty can be found in both the wildness and the stillness of life.

Now on display throughout HFSC’s hallways for patients to enjoy, and available for purchase!

Happy Lunar New Year! 🏮 To celebrate this Year of the Fire Horse, therapeutic recreation therapists Olivia and Chris shared Chinese and Korean New Year's cultural traditions with our patients. They learned the history of the celebrations, made paper lanterns to light the way for hope and prosperity, and celebrated one another's strength and resilience.

These inclusive and fun festivities highlight the significant role our TR specialists play in promoting social connection for our patients - a perfect way to also recognize Recreational Therapy Month and the impact it makes! ✨
