This week we are recognizing our Emergency Department for exemplifying two of our core values of compassion and teamwork. Together they collected and donated items to support a program participant of our Hospital Violence Intervention Program who has recently been housed. When the staff learned that they had a wish list of household items to help get settled, they immediately swooped in to action.

In the wake of multiple tragedies, the fight to end gun violence has never been more urgent. Today, we for a brighter future free of gun violence. 🧡 WAVE - Working together Against Violence to Empower

06/04/2021

RWJUH’s Level I Trauma Center’s WAVE (Working Together Against Violence to Empower)/Hospital Violence Intervention Program wore orange today to raise awareness about gun violence in our nation.

The Wear Orange campaign traces its roots to the senseless shooting death of Hadiya Pendleton.

On January 21, 2013, Hadiya, a high school student from the south side of Chicago, marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s childhood friends decided to commemorate her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. Wear Orange originated on June 2, 2015—what would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday. Now, it is observed nationally on the first Friday in June and the following weekend each year. In the years since, participation in Wear Orange has increased tenfold.

RWJUH WAVE assists trauma patients, who have been injured due to community violence, recover from physical and emotional trauma by empowering them with skills, resources and opportunities. RWJUH’s Violence Intervention Team provides services in the healthcare, home and / or community setting.
