Neuropsychologists play an important role in diagnosing dementia and in developing dementia treatment plans. A neuropsychological evaluation provides information about how the brain works and helps determine why someone is experiencing changes in memory or thinking. The results of the evaluation may reveal whether the memory or thinking changes can be improved or will get worse over time. The evaluation results can also help a neuropsychologist suggest other healthcare professionals that can offer support for persons with dementia and their family members.

In this upcoming guest speaker webinar, I will describe the neuropsychological evaluation process and how it can help diagnose different types of dementia. I will also discuss ways in which the results of a neuropsychological evaluation can assist caregivers and persons with dementia to better manage the disease.

NAN Hill Day! The National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN) met with members of Congress and their staff today. It was an honor to be a part of this group. We focused on several issues today, especially increasing access to care. Neuropsychology is a specialized field which focuses on the assessment and treatment of brain injuries and disorders. Quite frankly, there are not enough of us. Out of my graduating class at La Salle University, I was the only one who went into the neuropsychology specialty. Many people do not know what a neuropsychologist does! Wait times for evaluations are long all over the country, sometimes reaching 12-18 months in the pediatric subspecialty. As the population ages, there will be more and more demand for our services.

Neuropsychologists are instrumental in diagnosing brain-related conditions and informing treatment recommendations. In my practice, I’m often faced with differentiating causes of memory decline. An Alzheimer’s disease patient will look different from vascular disease or Lewy body dementia. Early detection is key to identifying and implementing effective interventions and overall life planning needs. Today we discussed various avenues to increase access to care including the ADAPT Act, BOLD Act, and advocacy efforts towards CMS to name a few.

When I joined NAN as a graduate student, I had no idea I would be involved in such important efforts. I’ve met some pretty awesome colleagues along the way. We want to advocate for our profession, but also share our knowledge of brain health with the community. If you are interested in learning more about brain health and need a legitimate source, check out , NAN’s digital magazine. Thanks !

I had a nice night out with my team and was pleasantly surprised to see old coworkers! My neuropsychology career started in brain injury. Prior to that, I thought I wanted to be a mental health psychologist. A practicum placement at a brain injury rehab in my 3rd year of grad school changed the course of my career.

I really enjoyed speaking at the Rutgers athletics Life After Sport Panel. Thank you for inviting me to speak about the transition from Division I gymnast to a board certified neuropsychologist, business owner and mom.

Many collegiate athletes struggle with the transition out of their sport. Their sport is tied to their identity. The truth is…you never stop being an athlete. The work ethic, determination, perseverance, team work and passion you had in your sport gets directed towards the next phase of life.

Scarlet Knight for life

Happy to attend another Knight of Networking! It was an impressive group of Rutgers athletes. I am grateful for my time on the banks as a Rutgers gymnast and I enjoy providing mentorship to fellow student athletes.

Sharing my journey from undergrad to grad school and beyond, and how those experiences led me to become a board certified clinical neuropsychologist.
