Life is funny sometimes. We moved into our Wallace Ave location in 2015 and lovingly used the space for 9 years before we a significantly outgrew the 1500 sq/ft space and moved to a 5400 sf building on Jefferson St. We put Wallace on the market and for 2 years it didn’t sell. Which turns out to be a good thing. Because now we are OPENING IT BACK UP since we have OUTGROWN Jefferson 🤯and are going to use BOTH spaces.

With Wallace starting as summer groups and a landing place for our awesome school based staff. ❤️ Allie has already called dibs on her room and we are trading out the old waiting room for a group room! Stay tuned for updates as things come together 🤪

Something exciting is happening at Angelus this summer — and we want your family to be part of it. 💙

Over the past year we have seen more families than ever reaching out for support for their kids and teens. You have trusted us with the people you love most, and we want to keep showing up for your community in bigger and better ways.

This summer we are launching group therapy programming for children and teens across Lawrence County — focused on the real stuff kids are dealing with right now. Managing big emotions. Building confidence. Navigating relationships and social media pressure. Getting through the hard moments safely. And so much more.

Groups will be covered by most insurance plans, with sliding scale options available. Because cost should never be the reason a kid doesn't get support.

Before we finalize the schedule, we want to hear from YOUR family.
We put together a short survey — about 5 minutes — where you can tell us what your child needs and when your family can make it work. Your answers directly shape what we build.

We are also hosting two FREE virtual parent info nights — just 30 minutes, no commitment:
📅 Tuesday May 5th at 12:00 PM
📅 Wednesday, May 6th at 6:00 PM

Click the link below to fill out the survey and register for a meeting — or share this with a family you know who could use some extra support this summer. 💙

Thank you for being part of the Angelus community. We could not do this without you — and we cannot wait to show you what this summer has in store.

Tag us if you share this and help us spread the word across Lawrence County. 🙌

🚨 What if the issue isn’t just stress, but how we lead people through it?

A recent chapter on trauma-informed leadership highlights a shift that’s critical in high-stress professions like first response:

👉 leadership must account for the impact of trauma on performance, behavior, and wellbeing.

🧠 What the research emphasizes:

Trauma doesn’t just affect how people feel—
it affects how they:
• think
• respond
• communicate
• perform under pressure

And in high-stress environments, that shows up every day.

💡 Trauma-informed leadership reframes this:

👉 Behavior is not just resistance or disengagement—
it may be a response to stress or past experiences.

🛡️ Core components of trauma-informed leadership:

✔️ Safety – physical and psychological
✔️ Trust & transparency – consistent communication
✔️ Empowerment – giving voice and autonomy
✔️ Connection – building strong, supportive teams

These principles help create environments where people can function—and recover—effectively.

⚠️ Why this matters in first responder settings:

When leaders don’t recognize trauma:
• behaviors get mislabeled
• stress escalates
• performance declines

But when they do:
👉 teams become more resilient
👉 communication improves
👉 trust increases

👉 The takeaway:

Leadership isn’t just about performance metrics; it’s about understanding the people behind them.

Because in this field, how you lead under stress shapes how your team performs through it.

🚨 The risk isn’t just the call—it’s the accumulation.

This research reinforces something many first responders already know:
👉 it’s not one incident that breaks you down
👉 it’s the repeated exposure over time

🧠 What the research shows:

First responders are routinely exposed to:
• traumatic events
• high-stress environments
• life-and-death decision making

And over time, that exposure adds up.

In fact:
👉 first responders experience significantly higher rates of PTSD, depression, and anxiety compared to the general population

⚠️ But here’s the key finding:

It’s not just trauma itself—
👉 it’s how often, how long, and without enough recovery

Many report:
• not having enough time to reset between calls
• carrying stress from one incident into the next

💡 Why this matters:

When stress becomes constant instead of episodic:
• burnout increases
• emotional exhaustion builds
• mental health symptoms intensify

This is what’s often referred to as cumulative trauma or operational stress injury—
not one event, but the weight of many over time

🛡️ What helps (according to research):

✔️ Early and ongoing mental health support
✔️ Peer support and connection
✔️ Time and space for recovery—not just pushing through
✔️ Organizational awareness of workload and exposure

👉 The takeaway:

You can handle hard calls.
That’s what you’re trained to do.

But no one is built to carry everything, indefinitely, without recovery.

🧠 This isn’t about toughness.
It’s about load—and how long you’ve been carrying it.

Today, these incredible humans gave up their Friday to do something that truly matters. 💙

Our Lawrence County Community Support & Trauma Response Team (LCCSTRT) came together for a half day of Critical Incident Stress Management training and mock CISD enactment — sharpening the skills and building the tools that support our first responders and community members when they need it most.

From law enforcement and county co-responders to mental health professionals and HOPE Therapy Dog Team — this crew shows up. Not because they have to, but because they understand that caring for those who care for us is essential work.

We are so grateful for every person in this photo — and for the many members of our community and team who continually show up behind the scenes to support our helpers and our community. You are all part of this. 🐾🍕

🚓🚒🚑 First Responders in Lawrence County

Some calls stay with you long after the shift ends.

The Lawrence County Community Support & Trauma Response Team (LCCSTRT) is building a network of first responders, clinicians, and community partners who step in after those calls — the ones that stick.

Join us Friday, March 20 for a team meeting and Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) debrief simulation at the Hope & Healing Center in New Castle.

You’ll learn:
• Practical coping tools designed for first responder culture
• How a structured critical incident debrief works
• How you can be part of supporting local crews when incidents hit hard

No prior CISM experience needed.

There’s something timeless about the lessons we learned from Mr. Rogers.

Long before terms like trauma-informed care or emotional safety were common in mental health conversations, Fred Rogers modeled what compassionate community looks like — through kindness, listening, and genuine presence.

In our newest blog, one of our therapists reflects on what Mr. Rogers taught us about trauma-informed community and why those lessons still matter today.

Sometimes the most healing thing we can offer another person is not advice or solutions — but simply being present and willing to listen.

It’s a reminder that community begins with small, everyday choices to see and care for one another.

At Angelus, we see these principles in action every day through our work with individuals, families, schools, and first responders.

Because healing often begins with something simple:

Being seen.
Being heard.
And knowing you belong.

❤️ Support, Comfort, and Community ❤️

This week, as part of the Lawrence County Community Support & Trauma Response Team, we had the honor of responding to the Lawrence County Career & Technical Center to support students and staff.

🐾 During the week, the HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response therapy dogs — Hazel, Titus, Hank, and Stella — provided calm, grounding support to students and staff.

On Friday, we were also grateful to have 🐾 Cash, a registered therapy dog, who is teamed with our therapist Stacy, to offer additional comfort and reassurance as students headed into the weekend.

These visits were about meeting students where they were, creating moments of calm, and reminding them that they are not alone as they navigate grief and difficult emotions.

We are deeply thankful to LCCTC for welcoming our team during such a tender time, and to our community partners who help make compassionate response possible. Together, we continue to show what healing looks like — through presence, care, and connection. 🫶

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available.

📞 HSC Crisis Line: 724-652-9000 — available 24 hours a day for local support

You don’t have to carry this alone. Support is here when you need it most.

Interacting with these calm, well-mannered dogs offered our students a simple yet powerful way to de-stress and share emotion, reminding them they were not alone.
