With Spring 🌷 just around the corner, here is a Curl Tip for cultivating that little garden of curls atop your head. Remember, your hair reflects the care that you give it and that includes protection from harmful ingredients.
Silicones are particularly harmful ingredients that continue to be prevalent in many curl-care products. Silicones are deceptive because they can generate a short-term “glide” and shine – but BEWARE that this result is ultimately NOT sustainable because with repeated applications the silicone slowly builds up a synthetic film barrier along the hair strands that sticks like glue, does not wash out, and attracts dirt. By the time you notice the silicone buildup, your hair will be fully coated. And if heat is applied to silicone infused curls, it will laminate your hair. Ultimately, the damage can only be removed by being cut out.
Curls that are coated in silicone cannot absorb the moisture they crave and will become excessively dry and brittle. Within weeks, the curls will become weighed down and tangled. In some cases, your head will produce excess oil to compensate, resulting in clogged pores.
And now for the good news. You can wake up from this entire nightmare by replacing silicones with a silicone-free conditioner with botanically based emollients that will provide the detangling slip that your curls require without the damage associated with silicones. If you have any doubts about whether your product is indeed 💦 water soluble, try mixing a few drops in a glass of water. If the product does not dissolve, it is not water-soluble.
So, avoid all silicones in favor of water soluble ingredients that will nourish and nurture your garden of curls.
