One small change can make a big difference in a child’s relationship with food.

Try scheduling one family activity each week that centers around food: sharing a meal, cooking together, gardening, or even play-based activities. These moments help children explore new foods, reduce pressure around trying them, and encourage a more varied, healthy diet.

March is Child Life Month. Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital gives a shout out to Charlotte Beales, certified child life specialist, who made a meaningful connection with a patient, Lily.

Charlotte shares, “A few years ago, Lily was scheduled for a procedure, her mom and I talked on the phone where she expressed concern of Lily’s anxiety in hospitals. During the conversation, I discovered Lily has a love of animals. On the day of the procedure, I met the family outside the hospital with our facility dog, Reina. Lily was so excited to meet Reina, her anxiety was eased and she helped me walk Reina into the hospital. Her dental procedure went well and her family was thankful.”

Recently, Lily’s mom reached out to share that since that visit, every time Lily passes a sign for Yale New Haven Health, she yells, “I love Yale New Haven! That’s where Charlotte works!” The three arranged to meet for lunch so that Lily would have the opportunity to have a “fun” visit without having to do any hard jobs.

Thank you to Charlotte and the whole Child Life team who make a big difference in our patients’ lives and experiences in the health care setting.

This week is Hearing Awareness Week — a global initiative to raise awareness about hearing loss prevention and promote accessible ear and hearing care worldwide. 👂💙

At Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, we are grateful for our incredible ENT and Audiology teams who provide life-changing care to children and families every day. We asked one of our patient families, “How has hearing healthcare changed your child’s life?”

"I will never forget the first day we came home after Ariya got her hearing aids. She was sitting near a window and screamed excitedly: 'Mommy I can hear the doggies barking outside!' I never knew that she couldn't hear that and it was the best feeling in the world. I recently asked her what her favorite part of her 'ears' are and she said when she hears music because she loves to dance. We are forever grateful that she has the gift of sound!"

Thank you to Ariya and her family for sharing their experience and entrusting us with her care. 💛

Feeding Families Foundation was founded by Jeff and Sam Dorman after their daughter Harper received treatment for leukemia at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital. Inspired by the kindness they experienced during Harper's treatment; they created the foundation to ensure that no parent has to leave the child's bedside to receive a nourishing meal.

Since launching in 2024, Feeding Families Foundation has provided more than 3,700 caregiver meal trays and an additional 8,000 meals from local New Haven restaurants for families on the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Floor, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

Meals are prepared through YNHCH's food service partner, Sodexo, and supplemented by local restaurant partners including Modern Apizza, Nolo, Olmo, Haven Hot Chicken, Bobbi's Pizza, Sherkaan Indian Street Food and The Parlor: A Pizza Joint - bringing comforting meals to families while supporting the New Haven food community.

In addition to daily meals, Feeding Families Foundation also supports families through the 24/7 Snack Program and Cakes for Kids Program, which delivers birthday cakes to hospitalized children and parents to create moments of joy during difficult times.

The Feeding Families Foundation continues to help families focus on what matters most: being present with their child during treatment.
