Aaron Perry didn’t just join the APT Foundation Board — he joined a mission he believes in deeply!

When he learned about APT’s Open Access model — where people can walk in and receive care the same day they’re ready — he knew he wanted to be part of helping expand that impact.

Today, Aaron brings both his personal perspective and frontline experience to the APT Foundation, helping ensure that decisions are grounded in compassion, urgency, and the real needs of the community!

Because at APT, leadership isn’t just about governance — it’s about making sure help is there when it matters most.

Stigma DOESN'T always announce itself — but its impact is EVERYWHERE!

It shows up in the hesitation to ask for help.
In the fear of being judged.
In the silence that keeps people from accessing care when they need it most.

At APT Foundation, we work every day to replace stigma with understanding, access, and compassion — because recovery begins when people feel safe enough to take that first step!

When did you first realize how stigma impacts people seeking care? Let us know in the comments.

What makes treatment ACTUALLY accessible?

For too many people, care comes with barriers — long wait times, complicated requirements, or uncertainty about whether they’ll be turned away. Those obstacles can delay care at the exact moment someone is ready to take the first step.

At the APT Foundation, our model is built differently. Walk-in access, same-day treatment, and integrated support services mean people can begin care when they’re ready—not weeks later!

Because recovery shouldn’t depend on timing, resources, or navigating complicated systems.

Access to care doesn’t just happen — it’s something that has to be planned and fought for!

In this powerful moment from the Open Access, Open Mic podcast, APT Foundation Board Member Aaron Perry reflects on what it really takes to bring life-saving treatment into the communities that need it most.

Behind every clinic is a commitment to meeting people where they are — and a refusal to accept barriers as the status quo.

Because treatment only works if people can actually reach it!

At the APT Foundation, we believe access should never depend on geography, politics, or circumstance. It should depend on one thing: someone being ready for help.

Throughout history, women have been at the forefront of changing how we understand addiction, treatment, and recovery. Dr. Nora Volkow is one of those leaders!

As Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, her work has helped shift the conversation — from blame to science, from stigma to treatment, and from barriers to access.

Her words remind us of something we see every day: stigma DOESN'T just hurt feelings — it keeps people from getting the care that could SAVE their lives.

At the APT Foundation, we are committed to breaking down those barriers. Because treatment should be accessible, compassionate, and available the moment someone is ready!

This Women’s History Month, we honor the women whose leadership continues to transform care, challenge stigma, and make recovery possible for more people every day.

For TOO many people, access to treatment is shaped by barriers they can’t control — long waitlists, stigma, cost, or simply not knowing where to turn!

But deciding to seek help is already one of the hardest steps someone can take. What happens next SHOULDN'T be uncertain.

At the APT Foundation, we believe care should be available the moment someone is ready! That’s why our Open Access model allows individuals to walk in, be seen by licensed professionals, and begin treatment the same day — no appointment required.

You can walk in Monday–Saturday from 8:00–11:00 AM at our Long Wharf location in New Haven to get started.

Because getting better shouldn’t be left to chance. It should be met with compassion, dignity, and immediate support.

Three weeks can feel like a LIFETIME when someone is ready for help!!

At the APT Foundation, we’ve reduced the average time from intake to treatment from three weeks to an average of under three hours — because access SHOULDN'T depend on waiting, and care shouldn’t come too late.

By bringing services closer to where people live and removing barriers to treatment, we’re ensuring that support is available when it matters most. For many, that timely access can mean the difference between continuing to struggle and beginning recovery.

Every hour matters.
Every person matters.
And every moment of readiness deserves a response.

Access SHOULDN'T depend on where you live, who you know, or what resources you have!

For too many people, barriers like long wait times, stigma, cost, or lack of information make it harder to take that first step toward getting better.

But treatment works BEST when it’s designed around real people, real lives, and real needs — meeting someone the moment they’re ready, with dignity and support! 💙

At the APT Foundation, we believe accessible care means removing obstacles, listening to communities, and continuously improving how support is delivered.

So, answer this — What would make treatment feel more accessible in your community? Let us know in the comments below.

When someone decides they’re ready to get help, that moment is powerful — and it shouldn’t be met with barriers!

For many people, the decision to seek care comes after days, months, or even years of uncertainty. It takes STRENGTH to take that first step.

But when help isn’t available right away, that moment of readiness can be lost — not because someone doesn’t want to get better, but because the system wasn’t ready for them.

Access to care SHOULDN'T depend on timing, luck, or circumstance. It should be there when someone needs it most!

At the APT Foundation, we believe readiness should be met with action — not waitlists. That’s why our Open Access model ensures people can walk in and receive care the same day they reach out.

Because when someone says, “I’m ready,” they deserve to be heard.

Share this to help others understand why timely access to care can make all the difference.

In the most recent episode of Open Access, Open Mic — APT Board Member, Aaron Perry shares a powerful truth: support isn’t about forcing change!

It’s about making sure someone knows they’re not alone when they’re ready to take that step.

Readiness can’t be rushed. But compassion, patience, and presence can make ALL the difference.

If you love someone who may be struggling, your care matters more than you know. And if you’re the one who needs help, compassionate, immediate care exists — without judgment and without waiting!

🔁 Share this to remind someone they’re not alone — whether they need support or are supporting someone else.

One year ago, the APT Foundation opened its Guilford program to bring lifesaving treatment closer to home!

Since then, more than 250 patients have accessed same-day, evidence-based care—many who previously had to travel long distances just to get help. By removing barriers like wait times, cost, and location, we’re making it easier for people to take the first step when they’re ready.

With upcoming facility improvements and mobile medicine units, we’ll be able to reach even more communities and expand access across the shoreline!

Help us spread the word: care is closer than ever. 💙

Mission Statement

Founded in 1970, the APT Foundation’s mission is to promote the health and recovery for those who live with substance use disorders and/or mental illness.

Vision

It is the philosophy of the APT Foundation that the disease of addiction must be treated in a holistic way. It is our belief that addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit, affecting a person’s social and emotional functioning, and that treatment must address all of these needs.
