Stigma keeps people from getting the help they need — We need to change that!

Effective, evidence-based medications are a powerful part of treatment and recovery for substance use disorder — but they’re often misunderstood or unfairly judged.

That judgment? It creates barriers that can be life-threatening!

So we’re asking: What can we do — as individuals, as a community, as a society — to shift the way we talk about this kind of treatment and support the people who rely on it? 💬

Let’s challenge the stigma, together. Drop your thoughts below. 👇

The stakes have NEVER been higher!

As addiction continues to touch more families and substances grow more dangerous, access to proven treatment like methadone is more critical than ever.

At the APT Foundation, we’re meeting this crisis head-on—providing same-day care, fighting for equitable access, and giving individuals a real chance at recovery despite the financial and systemic challenges they face.

In this reel, Directors Aaron Perry and Fred Erskine share why our work matters now more than EVER!

💬 What do you believe is the most urgent need in the fight against addiction today?

When a campaign saves lives and gets national recognition — people take notice! 🚨

The APT Foundation’s Breaking Barriers campaign is officially award-winning — honored across multiple creative and healthcare platforms for its bold storytelling, urgent message, and real-world impact.

But, this ISN'T about awards — It's important to remember that the campaign is about shifting how we talk about treatment, access, and dignity in the face of the opioid crisis!

Read the full blog to see why this message resonated nationwide, and how together, we’re creating a system that treats addiction like the public health emergency it is.

“I need help.” That should be enough!

When someone reaches out for support, they’re already doing the hard part. The system shouldn’t make it harder.

Structural barriers like long waitlists and limited access don’t just delay care — they send a message that people don’t matter. And that is stigma in action!

At APT, we’re working to dismantle those barriers — because everyone deserves immediate, compassionate care.

Everybody knows somebody!

Whether it’s a friend, a family member, or a neighbor — we are all connected to someone impacted by substance use.

This January, we’re honoring Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment Month by recognizing the humanity behind the headlines. Because behind every statistic is a person who deserves care, dignity, and a path to recovery!

Let’s reduce stigma.
Let’s raise awareness.
Let’s break barriers.

💬 What do you think needs to change about how we talk about recovery? Let us know in the comments.

Support ISN'T always loud...

Sometimes it’s quiet.
Sometimes it’s unlearning.
Sometimes it’s just showing up.

As we close out the year, we’re reflecting on the lessons that moved us — and the people who reminded us what real compassion looks like!

What did you learn this year about what it means to truly support someone in need? Let us know in the comments. ⬇️

Why is methadone still one of the most stigmatized treatments for opioid use disorder? 💬

Despite being a gold standard in evidence-based care, methadone is often misunderstood — treated as a “last resort” or burdened by rigid, outdated rules that make access harder than it needs to be.

That stigma doesn’t just hurt feelings — it keeps people from getting help! It’s time to change the narrative...

Let’s talk about what real support looks like — and why people deserve options that meet them with dignity, not judgment.

What do you think needs to shift in how we talk about medication-based treatment? Let us know in the comments. ⬇️

Real change starts with real understanding!

When you step into the work of substance use recovery, the biggest lessons often come from the people seeking help themselves.

Our board members, Aaron and Fred, reflect on what they’ve learned (& unlearned) through their direct involvement. From breaking down stigma to recognizing the role of environment and timing, their insights point to one essential truth:

Everyone deserves care the moment they’re ready!
That’s why APT’s Open Access model exists — because asking for help is hard enough. Getting it shouldn’t be.

From all of us at APT: thank you for being part of our mission. Here’s to hope, healing, and connection — today and every day.

Mission Statement

Founded in 1970, the APT Foundation’s mission is to promote the health and recovery for those who live with substance use disorders and/or mental illness.

Vision

It is the philosophy of the APT Foundation that the disease of addiction must be treated in a holistic way. It is our belief that addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit, affecting a person’s social and emotional functioning, and that treatment must address all of these needs.
