Choosing a nursing home isn’t something most of us plan for—but when you need one (even short-term), being prepared makes all the difference.

In this video, David Hunter, President & CEO of Mary Wade | Chatham Place at Mary Wade, shares a simple checklist for evaluating a skilled nursing center:
✅ Visit in person
✅ Look around—and yes, pay attention to how it smells
✅ Notice whether staff are engaged with residents
✅ Ask about activities, menus, and nutrition support (including dietary needs, allergies, and preferences)

He also explains why planning ahead matters more than ever as Connecticut continues to reduce the number of nursing homes statewide—making it harder for families to find care close to home.

One thing many families don’t realize: you may want a specific nursing home—but you might not be able to get in when you need it.

In this video, David Hunter, CEO of Mary Wade, explains that Connecticut is one of the few states with a law governing nursing home waiting lists—meaning facilities must follow an ordered list of applicants.

His advice: apply early. ✅

There’s no cost to submit an application, and if a spot opens before you’re ready, you can always say “not yet.” But being on the list gives you options when timing matters.
