This time of year, I see a lot of people dealing with that heavy, blocked feeling in the head and chest. When congestion shows up, I usually keep things very simple.
In Ayurveda, the goal is to warm, thin, and gently move mucus so the body can clear it on its own. Small, consistent practices—started early—often make the biggest difference.
Here are a few things I commonly suggest:
Ginger tea
This is my go-to. Slice 1–2 inches of fresh ginger and simmer it in 2 cups of water for about 10 minutes. Strain and sip warm. Ginger helps loosen heaviness and support circulation. You can add lemon if you like. If using honey, add it only once the tea has cooled.
Ginger + black pepper
When congestion feels more stubborn, a small pinch of black pepper (about ⅛ tsp) added to ginger tea can help add movement. I keep this gentle, especially for people who tend to run hot or get reflux.
Tulsi (holy basil) tea
Tulsi is aromatic and clarifying, and I often use it for seasonal support and easier breathing. Steep 1 tsp dried tulsi (or a small handful fresh) in hot water for 10 minutes, covered. One to three cups a day during congestion is usually plenty.
Steam
Steam can be very helpful if kept short and gentle.
– Ajwain steam: hot water with 1 tsp ajwain, inhaled for 5–7 minutes
– Eucalyptus steam: hot water with 1–2 drops essential oil, inhaled for 3–5 minutes
With essential oils, I always say less is more—you want clear and comfortable, not intense.
I like these practices because they’re simple, supportive, and easy to return to when congestion first starts. I’ll be sharing more soon on dry cough support.
