For the joy of feeling good in your body…

26 miles on the bike with her husband, and she came in glowing, grounded, and softly spent. She then melted into the table, drifted off, and let everything integrate.

I love this kind of spring energy—he and his wife went out for a 26-mile bike ride together and both came in after for a reset. He said it was the most relaxing nap he’s had in a while—totally in the zone. Those two impress and inspire me.

Fertility as a Whole-Body
A recent article was created from an interview about Applepuncture’s approach to fertility and acupuncture.

It explored how fertility reflects the body’s overall state of nourishment, circulation, and nervous system regulation.

This piece feels closely aligned with how I think about and practice this medicine.

Spring is beautiful! But for many people it also means sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and sinus pressure as tree pollen begins to rise in March.

One of my favorite ways to support patients during this season is acupuncture for allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergies). Starting treatment before pollen levels peak can make a significant difference in how intense symptoms become.

🌿 When to start:
Early March is an ideal time in our region to begin preparing the body for spring pollen.

🌿 Typical treatment plan:
• 1 treatment per week for 4–6 weeks at the start of the season
• Then every 2–3 weeks during peak pollen months if needed
• Many patients notice improvement after 2–3 sessions

🌿 What acupuncture may help with:
• Nasal congestion
• Sneezing and runny nose
• Sinus pressure
• Itchy or watery eyes
• Immune system regulation

What research shows:
• A large randomized controlled trial published in Annals of Internal Medicine found that patients receiving acupuncture for allergic rhinitis had significantly reduced symptoms and improved quality of life compared with usual care.
• Studies suggest acupuncture may modulate immune response, reducing inflammatory cytokines involved in allergy pathways.
• Clinical trials have also observed lower IgE levels and decreased antihistamine use among patients receiving regular treatments.

In Chinese medicine terms, seasonal allergies are often related to Wei Qi (defensive immune energy) and the body’s ability to regulate responses to environmental changes like wind and pollen.

“In all other relationships, boundaries matter for health. But we have no boundaries with our phones.” Aditi Nerurkar

In clinic and in my own life, I witness a particular kind of restlessness many of us describe feeling “wired but tired,” as if our attention is always slightly pulled elsewhere and in various directions at once. Increasingly, research suggests that our relationship with our phones plays a meaningful role in this experience.

Research is increasingly clear that constant phone stimulation — notifications, short-form video, rapid context switching — activates dopamine pathways and keeps the brain in a low-grade vigilance state. Over time, this can affect attention, mood, sleep, and even memory.

Psychiatrist Anna Lembke describes how repeated micro-rewards can lower our baseline sense of satisfaction. Stress researcher Aditi Nerurkar talks about “Popcorn Brain,” where attention becomes fragmented. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt has shown how constant digital input reshapes emotional development and social experience.

Phones are extraordinary tools… and powerful environments. The question isn’t whether to use them, but how to create space.

You might notice today:
• When do I reach for my phone automatically?
• How do I feel after scrolling?
• What happens if I allow a few moments of quiet?

If you’d like support recalibrating your nervous system, acupuncture can help create that space.

Proud Pregnancy 🤍

This photo is shared with permission as a quiet reminder of what consistent, supportive care can help make possible.

Acupuncture supports fertility by working with the body’s own regulatory systems (hormonal, nervous, circulatory, digestive, and even emotional). Whether someone is trying to conceive naturally or going through IVF, the goal is the same: to create the most receptive, well-resourced internal environment possible for a little one to thrive.

For natural fertility, acupuncture can help by:
• supporting regular ovulation and balanced cycles
• improving blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
• calming the nervous system (stress and fertility are deeply linked)
• addressing underlying patterns like inflammation, pain, or hormonal dysregulation

For IVF, acupuncture works alongside modern reproductive medicine. Research suggests it helps by:
• improving uterine blood flow around transfer
• supporting endometrial receptivity
• regulating stress hormones that can interfere with implantation
• helping patients feel more grounded and supported during an intense process

Every fertility journey is different. Every body has its own timing. But supportive, individualized care can make a meaningful difference along the way.

This treatment worked through the inner and outer Bladder lines, focusing on the Heart–Pericardium–Diaphragm axis of the nervous system.”

Along both sides of the spine run two parallel acupuncture channels known as the Bladder meridians. In classical Chinese medicine, these lines form the deepest communication pathway between the internal organs, the autonomic nervous system, and our emotional life.

The inner Bladder line contains the Back-Shu points — direct reflex points for the organs. In this treatment I worked primarily with the Heart (BL15), Pericardium (BL14), and Diaphragm region (BL16–17), as well as Kidney (BL23). This is the network that governs emotional regulation, relational stress, shock, breath, and the body’s capacity to soften rather than brace.

These points regulate how much pressure the nervous system can hold before it tightens or collapses.

The outer Bladder line holds how the body has adapted over time, or the imprint of long-term stress, emotional strain, and vigilance stored in the tissues.

For this person, the story lived in the upper back and chest: emotional load, nervous-system fatigue, and persistent holding. Rather than treating pain in isolation, I worked through these two layers, allowing the body to reorganize itself from the inside out.

Clinical Red Flag 🚩: Unintentional Weight Loss

A 44-year-old female presented for acupuncture for fatigue, sleep disturbance, and feeling generally unwell. On intake she reported a 12-pound weight loss over 4 months without intentional changes in diet or activity. She denied pain, acute illness, or significant gastrointestinal symptoms. She remained functional but described a progressive decline in baseline energy.

Because unintentional weight loss represents a systemic red flag, she was referred for medical evaluation prior to treatment.

Laboratory workup revealed hyperthyroidism.

She returned for acupuncture after medical management to support nervous system regulation and recovery.

Clinical note:
Unintentional weight loss is often overlooked because it is painless, gradual, and frequently perceived as desirable.
However, it may reflect underlying endocrine, hematologic, autoimmune, infectious, or malignant processes.

Teaching point:
Progressive change in baseline function warrants medical assessment before complementary care.

Pattern: recurring physiological themes
Observation: what repeats itself across systems
Context: fertility and whole-body function

In clinical practice, certain signs tend to cluster together… not randomly, but as part of a larger pattern.

Cold hands and feet, slow or heavy digestion, fatigue, and a sense of internal cold often point to what Chinese medicine calls Spleen Yang deficiency—a system struggling to generate and distribute warmth and nourishment.

Pattern: Spleen Yang deficiency
Observation: cold limbs, digestion, energy, dampness
Context: fertility support

This pattern can matter in fertility, as warmth, circulation, and digestion are foundational to reproductive health.

Importantly: pattern recognition guides inquiry, not conclusions. Even within the same pattern, each individual expresses it differently. Treatment is always tailored to the person in front of us, not the label.
