Heard this today and immediately loved the invitation to explore our own accountability in our lives:

I'm thrilled to announce the opening of my new office at 400 Bayonet Street, Suite 202, New London CT, located just before the New London Shopping Center. It's handicap accessible, has plenty of parking and, most importantly, is a welcoming space to all who enter.

Here's my September rah rah speech (which I try to live out every day):

If you want something badly, allow it to find you. Don't hide behind excuses (such as "I'm not ready"), procrastination and bad habits as reasons why you haven't "gotten there" yet. Hiding is the friend of insecurity, poor follow through and low ambition.

Rather than thinking of happy coincidences as being only due to chance, try adopting the thought that "something or someone I really wanted in my life found me because I allowed that to be."

Happy (almost) Autumn. Stay mindful, and aim for pro-action over reaction!

Living a More Mindful Life: Part of mindfulness is learning to "notice" versus react and jump in. It teaches the brain to just observe rather than participate, especially if we are under stress or emotions are high. Quite literally, you can train your brain to calm down and just sit with whatever presents itself before taking action.

For example, if you're around someone who gets on your nerves, tell yourself, "I'm noticing I'm sighing a lot and my fingers are clenched. Do I want to keep this up or make a choice to tune her out, end the visit and limit my time with her?" As a famous saying goes, "Everything begins and ends with ME." Translation: I can't change others, but I can change how I respond to them.

If you can adopt this kind of attitude, over time you will be less likely to "step in it", choosing more often to step around it and make your day easier. When that happens, you are more in charge and less likely to blame others for whatever is bothering you. Our most daunting lifelong challenge is to know ourselves better than anyone else, own who we are, and, ideally, have it be "good enough". Mindfulness offers you one way to do just that.

Due to the long-standing mental health effects of the pandemic, many of us who are therapists are getting flooded with requests for counseling and, unfortunately, most of us are unable to take new clients.

If you or someone close to you is in need of therapy and you are finding it hard to locate an available therapist, reach out to me and I will collaborate with other therapists in my circle to see if one of us can be helpful. If you are a practicing therapist yourself, please let me know and I will add you to our group. All of us accept commercial insurances and Husky/Medicaid, and those of us who are LCSWs or PhDs can accept Medicare as well.

Above all, be mindful of your moods, thoughts and behaviors so you know when help is needed. Don't go through it alone.

Are you putting on "pandemic pounds?" Being more sedentary because of shut downs in the state is understandable, but keep alert to extra pounds creeping up on you during this difficult time.

If you never went to the gym when we didn't have a pandemic, you probably didn't miss it that much. However, with gyms and other businesses starting to open in the state, consider which ones feel safe for you to visit, especially if they will help your mental and physical health. For that matter, consider purchasing an exercise mat for your home along with some hand weights. With just these few items, you can create what is called a 5-minute fit break.

Choose two exercises you are comfortable doing, such as push ups, even if they are from your knees, squats, or planks. For 20 consecutive seconds do each of these exercises with 10 seconds of break in between each set. Continue doing these sets until 5 minutes have elapsed. Yes, you will feel gassed, but also accomplished!

Personal trainers state that doing these 5-minute fit breaks can give you the same benefits of fat burning that you would get in a 20 to 30 minute run. The best part is you can do it at home, do it during a commercial break if you're watching television, or go outside, and get some air while you help to keep your pandemic pounds to a minimum! Not only that, but your stress, anxiety and depression will get a welcomed time out.

Easy but effective self calming tool: put your hands together (as if praying) and lightly rub them together, like you are washing your hands, allowing your fingertips to gently stroke the palms. Focus on sending the message to your brain that you are safe, or will be okay. Repeat this regularly if anxiety starts to overshadow your day.

WATERFORD May 22, 2019 -- Cyndia Shook, LCSW has been selected for the 2019 Best of Waterford Award in the Psychotherapist category by the Waterford Award Program. Her practice specializes in the treatment of Complicated Grief, Women's Issues and Gay and Le***an mental health.

Ms. Shook is among a very small group of companies that have won the Best of Waterford Award for two consecutive years. This distinction has qualified her for the 2019 Waterford Business Hall of Fame.

These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Waterford area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2019 Waterford Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Waterford Award Program and data provided by third parties.

New technique for those interested in a cognitive behavioral remedy for anxiety, depression and symptoms related to trauma. It's called "Brainspotting" and involves fixing your gaze at certain spots that your therapist points to and focusing on which "spot" makes symptoms worse and which one brings a relief of symptoms. This can also involve listening to music on headphones while doing it.

I have been training in this method and am seeing good results. Google it or check it out on You Tube to get an idea of how it works and please reach out to me if I can help with whatever is blocking you from being or feeling your best.
