How does Ketamine work?
Ketamine has emerged as a breakthrough treatment for resistance, Depression, Suicidal thought, Anxiety, PTSD, Chronic Pain, Addiction, Existential crisis, and even End of Life transitions
But how does ketamine work?
It has two main modes of action. The first is Pharmacological: It has:
Surgical Anesthesia
Chronic Pain Management
Antidepressant
Anti-Inflammatory and
Anti-Addictive actions
It accomplishes this by a complex interaction with the brain involving at least 30 receptor pathways including MNDA, Dopamine, and Serotonin
MNDA results in anesthesia, anti-pain, antidepressant, amnestic, and psychedelic effects.
Dopamine is involved in “reward” pathways and so helps us assign importance and meaning to things. It is also involved in antidepressant, and psychedelic effects.
Serotonin has antidepressant and analgesic effects. These interactions are;
complex and largely not understood.
The second mode of action is “Sacred Dimensions of Consciousness” also called Mystical or “Psychedelic”: Studies suggest this may be the more powerful mechanism of action.
In studies across the world, in diverse cultures and religious beliefs, ranging from Orthodox to Secular.
It is a strong mystical component of the experience that result in the most rapid and longest-lasting resolution of symptoms across all the indications for ketamine.
There may be several reasons for this: It may help you: release your innate healing response. Process subconscious issues that are inhibiting your recovery, connect with a “higher self”, “collective consciousness”, or “universal oneness”
Or open a conduit to a dimension of consciousness unknowable by science.
We just don’t know.
What we do know, is a higher Emotional Intelligence is associated with better health of all types, not just mental health but high blood pressure, pain, autoimmune diseases, heart disease, and even cancer.
Processing subconscious traumas can lead to radical self-acceptance.
The human condition is, as Martin Luther put it, “simultaneously saint and sinner”
It is easy to love your saint… It is your sinner that needs to be loved.
Like a little boy crying, your sinner is seeking attention.
Love is the healing attention it craves.
Think of Ebenezer Scrooge. We see a stingy, greedy, mean man but after his visions, he transforms to a kind, loving, generous man. Certainly, his emotional intelligence was elevated… One can imagine his total wellness was as well.
Ketamine removes blocks of the conscious mind. Allowing access to the Subconscious mind and thus processing of trauma.
Ketamine can facilitate personal transformation.
Those that have strong mystical experiences, describe a personal transformation, that allows the issue whether addiction, depression, PTSD, chronic pain… or whatever to dissolve away.
Not necessarily miraculously all at once, sometimes with repeat treatments, integration, and counseling.
