There is a myth about couple's therapy that this is where relationships go to die. While this may be a reason for some couples who are trying to end a relationship more effectively, this is not true for the majority of cases. People go to couple's therapy for a multitude of reasons. One study found that 46 percent of couples wanted to handle conflict better, 30 percent wanted to restore their bond, and 25 percent of couples felt they were doing well and just wanted to enhance some part of their marriage. A different study found that 57 percent of couples were hoping to increase their closeness or wanted to improve how they interact and talk with each other. The study also found that 32 percent of couples wanted to address issues with their children, 28 percent wanted to enhance their physical connection, 15 percent were motivated by fondness for their partner, and 10 percent wanted to focus on maintaining the strengths in their relationship. Couple's therapy can lead to many positive results and is a great way to strengthen any relationship.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic state of severe worry and tension. Those with GAD usually realize that this amount of worry is unwarranted. GAD affects about 6.8 million American adults with women being twice as likely as men to be afflicted. Some of the behavioral symptoms of GAD are an inability to control excessive worrying, difficulty with falling or staying asleep, irritability, being easily startled or scared, and having difficulty concentrating and sometimes having the mind go blank. The physical symptoms can include headaches and fatigue, muscle tension and aches, having a hard time swallowing, trembling or twitching, sweating, shaking, having a rapid heartbeat, nausea, light-headedness and tingling in the extremities, feeling out of breath, having to go to the bathroom frequently, and hot flashes. The causes of GAD are complex and may result from a combination of genetics and behavioral and developmental factors. The treatment for GAD includes medication and therapy. The most commonly used therapy methods are psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. What tends to be the most effective for many people is a combination of both medication and therapy.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (51.5 million in 2019).One in six U.S. children between the ages of 6 and 17 has a treatable mental health disorder such as depression, anxiety problems or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. There is still so much stigma surrounding mental illness which prevents people from seeking out the help they need. Even if someone is actively looking for treatment often health insurance doesn't adequately cover mental illness treatment. Awareness of mental illness and the need for treatment has been growing but there is still much work that needs to be done.

There are a number of benefits in attending group therapy. Many people feel a sense of relief when they hear from others with similar issues and realize they are not alone. Attending group therapy can ease a sense of isolation and promote social skills. Groups provide a wider range of perspectives which can help people deal with their problems better. Seeing what other people are able to accomplish can provide one with a sense of hope and encouragement.

A specific phobia is an extreme fear of a specific situation, object, or setting. People with these phobias often know there is no real reason to be afraid and that their behaviors are overreactions. 7 - 9% of Americans are affected by this condition and it occurs twice as often in women than in men. Specific phobias usually emerge in childhood or adolescence and can have lifelong symptoms. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a leading therapy approach for treating specific phobia disorder. CBT interventions help change the thinking and behaviors that cause distress in specific situations.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression and the incidence of the disorder is increasing everywhere. Depression comes in different forms and is often co-occurring with anxiety. Repetitive negative rumination, a bleak outlook on life, and a lack of energy are some of the signs of clinical depression. It is important to remember that depression is not a sign of weakness nor is it a condition that can be shrugged off. People with depression can’t just "snap out of it" to get better.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an illness that effects more than 2% of American adults. This disorder causes a person to experience unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, images, or sensations (obsessions) and engage in behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) in response. The compulsions usually provide temporary relief for the obsessions, and not performing the compulsions can lead to feelings of distress. OCD is treated with psychotherapy, medication or both. The types of therapy include Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention.

Exposure Therapy is a Cognitive Behavioral Intervention aimed at helping people confront their fears. This is done by creating a safe space for the client to be "exposed" to the object or situation which they fear. This habituation decreases a client's fear and reduces their avoidance of the feared object or situation.

Someone with paranoia feels that others are plotting against him/her or is incredibly suspicious for no reason. About 15-30% of the population experiences suspicious thoughts. It's important to remember that paranoia is a disorder of the mind and not a character flaw.
