Tulane - Department of Surgery Tulane School of Medicine's Department of Surgery Modern surgeons, leading a cascading impact to transform our profession.

We are successfully leading the transformation in surgery by focusing on these six strategic pillars:

1. Our rich history has created the foundation for our latest innovations and forward thinking strategies to cultivate education research and patient care. We expect each member of our team to make a celebrated contribution to this well-known reputation.

2. We are the clinical powerhouse of the Gulf South. Our surgeons are first choice among patients and providers. We focus especially on organizing care for complex patients and meeting the health needs of underserved populations.

3. We develop the modern surgeon through a curriculum that drives excellence in surgical skill and these four areas: effective teaming, learning systems, wellness and leadership development.

4. Our research is meaningful, unique and translates to clinical practice. Our academic surgeons lead the way in shaping the guidelines that improve the quality and efficiency of surgical practice.

5. We successfully recruit diverse faculty and trainees from all populations and geographic regions so our impact reaches into every community.

6. We intentionally create an esprit de corps where the whole person thrives. Our alum seek and hold leadership roles in our societies and in other centers, allowing us to spread our cultural principles throughout the surgical profession. Tulane University School of Medicine Department of Surgery Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Statement:

We, the members of the Tulane Department of Surgery, are committed to establishing an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment. We firmly believe diversity amplifies our strengths and fosters a thriving and sustainable community. We respect and embrace the rich distinctions present through race, gender, religious beliefs, national origin, ethnicity, age, disability, political beliefs, gender identity or sexual orientation. Through deliberate and transparent action, we seek to achieve our vision and successfully recruit diverse faculty, staff and residents including those who have been, historically underrepresented in medicine, in an effort to reflect the identities of all of the patients we serve. Persistent examination of our policies and processes provides the opportunity to improve their effectiveness and to minimize bias, prejudice, and discrimination. Through education, we champion cultural competency and intentionally break down barriers to safe communication. As part of the department, our residency and fellowship programs value diversity and inclusion. They present a rich educational and multicultural experience through a whole-person nurturing environment. As a department, we strive to create a safe professional community, which offers a sustainable sense of belonging for all staff, students, residents, fellows, and faculty.

We’re proud to share that Dr. Sharven Taghavi, Division Chief of Trauma, Acute Care, and Critical Care Surgery, has been awarded a $1.2M CDC grant to study whether bedside intervention during hospitalization can help survivors of violent injury avoid future revictimization.

The three-year project, conducted at University Medical Center New Orleans in collaboration with the Trauma Recovery Center and the Tulane Violence Prevention Institute, expands earlier work connecting patients with behavioral health support, firearm safety education, community resources, and goal-setting tools.

By following survivors aged 16 to 34 in both the short- and long-term, the study aims to understand how hospital-initiated, community-integrated interventions can change outcomes and whether this model can be applied more broadly.

As Dr. Taghavi puts it,
“...Ultimately, I hope this work puts trauma surgeons like me out of the business of treating violent injuries.”

Congrats to Dr. Shauna Levy for reaching a huge benchmark in bariatric care—100 SADI-S surgeries and counting!

Her work continues to change lives and expand access to safe, effective weight-loss care, reaching patients not just in the Greater New Orleans area but throughout the Gulf South.

You can walk with Dr. Levy on November 1 at the TREO Foundation's The Walk: New Orleans, a celebration of progress, transformation, and the journey toward better health through weight loss. 💚 Register here: https://bit.ly/46W1WkA

📈 100 surgeries and counting toward better lives.

Dr. Shauna Levy, Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tulane, recently hit the 100th SADI-S surgery mark.

Why SADI-S? Because, for select patients, it offers more powerful, long-lasting weight loss, especially for those with metabolic conditions, while carrying a lower complication risk.

In a state with some of the highest obesity and diabetes rates, Dr. Levy’s work is vital. Explore more about her practice and patient stories: https://ow.ly/WvJM50Xc5LI

More big news from Team Transplant! 💚

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Kiara Tulla, who is now *officially* a board-certified surgeon! She was inducted into the American College of Surgeons at the ACS Clinical Congress in Chicago earlier this month.

Dr. Tulla continues to make Tulane proud through her leadership, skill, and dedication to patients.

(We're also loving this photo cameo by a familiar face, former Tulane faculty member Dr. Hoonbae Jeon!)

Congratulations, Dr. Tulla! 👏

Thank you to everyone who joined us for another successful American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress Alumni Reception this week!

Each year, Tulane Surgery partners with LSU Department of Surgery (New Orleans), LSU Health Shreveport Department of Surgery, and UMMC Surgery to host a joint alumni reception during the ACS Clinical Congress—a national gathering that brings together surgeons, residents, and leaders from across the country.

This year’s event took place at the Marriott Marquis in Chicago, the official headquarters hotel for the 2025 Clinical Congress, and featured one of our most well-attended turnouts yet! From reconnecting with former colleagues to networking with peers across institutions, it was an evening filled with camaraderie and shared purpose.

A special thank you to the Tulane Surgical Society for supporting our Chief Residents, making it possible for them to attend the Clinical Congress and experience yet another opportunity to learn, connect, and grow.

And to our partner institutions—thank you for continuing to collaborate with us each year to strengthen our network of surgeons across the Gulf South and beyond. 💚

From the lecture hall to the wine cellar… what a week to celebrate women in surgery! 🥂

We were honored to welcome Dr. Sandra Wong (Dean and Professor of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine) as our R. Davilene Carter Lectureship Grand Rounds speaker. Her presentation, “As the Sayings Go—Leadership and Life Lessons,” reminded us that true leadership comes from both skill and heart.

Ahead of her presentation, we toasted her visit at Tulane Surgery’s annual R. Davilene Carter Wine-Tasting Reception at Martin Wine Cellar — a Women in Surgery mixer that brought together surgeons, residents, and medical students from Tulane, Ochsner Health, and LSU Department of Surgery. Proof that when we celebrate TUgether, doors open for the future of surgery. 💚

Thank you to everyone who joined us in honoring the legacy of Dr. Carter and helping to open doors for the next generation of surgeons.
