Boundary setting doesn’t have to be icky! Most people in your life will understand if this year doesn’t look like most, and the people who can’t understand can respectfully get over it😂 Whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or navigating a loss or infertility, you deserve for this holiday season to be whatever feels best for YOU.

This morning, Ashley and Maria presented at Grand Rounds on trauma-informed care through a medical lens — exploring how to support patients during adverse birth outcomes, as well as how providers can care for themselves through vicarious trauma.

A heartfelt thank you to the Maternal-Fetal Medicine team and residents at Ochsner Baptist for the thoughtful discussion and your time this morning.

Pregnancy and infant loss touches more people than we often realize. It affects parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family, friends, and entire communities. Loss can come in many forms—miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, SIDS, infertility, or the death of a baby shortly after birth.

This month is a time to acknowledge these stories, honor the babies who are loved and remembered, and recognize the grief carried by so many. If this is part of your journey, know that your experience matters, and you do not walk it alone. 💜

“But I don’t want to forget” is something we hear a lot. Our memories are all we have sometimes to prove that something or someone was real. That it actually happened.

Healing isn’t about forgetting someone or something that took place. No amount of time, therapy, or medicine will make that the case. Healing is about learning to integrate grief into your life. Grief doesn’t go away, it moves forward with you, and you learn to grow around it.

The truth is, ✨anyone✨ can experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder. Fun right?!😅

✍️But here’s who we know are the most at risk for PMADs: those with a personal or familial history of depression or anxiety, those with low social supports or are single parenting, and those who have experienced pregnancy or birth complications in the past.

Okay PAUSE. If you just read that and you’re like “oh sh*t that’s me,” don’t panic! It doesn’t necessarily mean you will develop PMADs, just that you’re at an increased risk than say, someone who doesn’t fit that criteria🫶🏼

💡If you take anything away from this, we hope it’s that counseling during pregnancy GREATLY reduces mood and anxiety disorders postpartum. It also improves birth outcomes (hello, huge!), supports a healthy relationship with partner, and connects you with much needed PP resources and planning.
