Winter Solstice Blessing

Today we pause to honor the Solstice — the longest night, the hinge of the year, the sacred turning.

In the deep dark, seeds gather strength.  In the stillness, our inner knowing grows clearer.  And with the dawn, light begins its slow return.

May this Solstice bring you rest, renewal, and a sense of belonging to the vast cycles that hold us all.
  May you feel the ember within you glimmer warmly.  May the light find you, and may you meet it with an open heart.

Light returns slowly — first as a whisper, then a promise.

Time keeps on moving…

It’s been a while since I’ve shared much substantive here, partly because life has been full, and partly because it feels very hard to show up online as if everything in the world is normal. It isn’t. And holding all of that while running a tiny, heart-led business has been… a lot.

I’ve been navigating grief, global heaviness, community care, and also real moments of joy — like a long stretch with my family this summer, co-publishing a disaster prep workbook rooted in mutual aid, and continuing to steward an herb shop and this little perfume practice.

I’ve struggled with how to talk about any of this here. I try to keep this space uplifting, but I also don’t want to be someone who pretends the wider world doesn’t shape us. I’ve always had complicated feelings about “being a business” while holding anti-capitalist values — wanting to grow and also wanting to stay true to sustainability and care. What I do know is that commerce isn’t the same as capitalism, and small businesses don’t have to operate in the ways we’re taught to.

So here’s where I am:
 I’m still here. Still fulfilling orders. Still dreaming up new scents. Still marveling at the power of plants and the medicine of scent — especially in times like these.

I’m also being more selective with my energy this season. I’m doing fewer markets, spending more time with loved ones, and trying to practice the slowing down I always encourage others to do. It feels necessary and honest.

As I move forward, I’m thinking a lot about how Elspeth’s Airs can more openly align with my values — not only in practice, but in the stories I tell and the context I hold. I don’t have it all figured out, but I’m committed to showing up with integrity, care, and creativity. Both/and: taking action and tending to the spirit. Holding the grief and the beauty. Staying engaged while making space for breath.

Thank you for being here, for supporting this tiny but devoted operation, and for caring about scent as a way of grounding, remembering, and reconnecting.

The scent of a story that begins on a Greek island…

This year, I collaborated with artist, Anastasia Pelias , for her upcoming exhibition, “So is Life (Etsi Einai i Zoi)”, which opens on Thursday, 11/20, in Biloxi, MS.

The exhibition is a “multi-sensory installation that reflects on (her) mother’s life and the larger forces that shaped it- patriarchy, migration, and the passage of time.” She commissioned me to create an essential oil blend to be diffused in the space that captures the scent & feeling of Skopelos, the island where her mother was born, in the western Aegean Sea. I got to work with the fragrant essences of pine, wild herbs, and flowers native to the island (actually sourced from Greece!) The project and working with Anastasia were such pleasures, and felt so aligned with how I like to work with scent.

More from Anastasia: “This work transforms inherited memory and loss into a space that invites reflection and presence. The installation weaves together song, sound, scent, video, painting, and sculpture to evoke both my mother’s story and my own deep connection to the land she was forced to leave behind.”

Definitely worth the road trip to Biloxi if you’re in New Orleans. I hear great things about the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum, as well. I’ll be attending the opening on 11/20. Hit me up if you plan to come!

Handcrafted in small batches with high quality, natural ingredients, Elspeth’s Airs are intimate and subtle, blending with the wearer’s skin and unfolding over time. Each scent is a balance of top, heart and base notes and last for at least several hours and often longer. Spritz on your pulse points, in hair, on clothing for your enjoyment and that of those you allow in your personal space.

Elspeth’s Airs considers the source and sustainability of the botanical materials it uses, and constantly strives to stay current and do better.

While the aroma and energetics of the plants used form the basis of each perfume, their aromatherapeutic properties are also considered. Justine is currently completing an aromatherapy certification and will soon offer various products with specific therapeutic benefits.
