The people closest to us deserve the same clarity we give to strangers.
That’s the closeness-communication bias — and it quietly damages the relationships we care about most.
Ask the question. Have the conversation. Don’t assume they already know.

Eight children were murdered in Shreveport, Louisiana on Sunday morning. Ages 3 to 11. By their father.

I have thought about yet another horrific tragedy all weekend. As a psychologist. As a Louisiana woman, born and raised. As a mother.

Thoughts and prayers are not enough. They never are and never were. The data demands more from all of us. Thoughts and prayers don’t call a hotline. Thoughts and prayers don’t safety plan. Thoughts and prayers didn’t stop this — and they won’t stop the next one.

What stops the next one is information. Resources. People knowing the warning signs. Communities refusing to look away.

There are no clinical words adequate for this grief. But there are facts — and as a psychologist who works with so many women navigating relationships, I believe we owe it to these children and their mothers to say them out loud.

Domestic violence is not a private matter. It is a public health crisis. And Louisiana has been living inside that crisis for decades.

Swipe through for the statistics behind what happened Sunday — both nationally and here in our state — followed by resources for anyone who needs them right now.

If you are in danger, please don’t wait. Help is one call away.

🆘 National DV Hotline: 1-800-799-7233 (call or text, 24/7) 📍 Louisiana Statewide Hotline: 1-888-411-1333

We say their names: Jayla. Shayla. Kayla. Layla. Markaydon. Sariahh. Khedarrion. Braylon.

Fear keeps us stuck. Values move us forward. I’ve spent 17+ years watching exhausted moms of teens and young adults make decisions from a place of fear — fear of judgment, fear of being selfish, fear of what happens if they actually choose themselves.

But the moms who find their way back to themselves? They stopped asking “what will people think” and started asking “what do I actually value?”

That shift changes everything.

She’s not falling apart. She’s just been holding it together for so long she forgot what it feels like to simply be herself.

If that sentence just hit you — I want to talk to you.

I’m hosting one more small, intimate Zoom conversation on April 1st for moms of teens and young adults who are ready to be honest about what this season really feels like. 6-8 women only.

Free. Confidential. Facilitated by a licensed psychologist who gets it from the inside out — because I’m living it, too.

One group left. Tap the link in my bio to grab your spot. 🌊
