Caitlynn and I wrote a new "On Call Advice" article on our website, which is timely because we are seeing a ton of dry skin on babies and toddlers this month. Check it out for some practical tips!

Here is a cute Friday pic with a kid hanging out with that crazy monster from under his bed!

We are OPEN!! I just made it to work by 6:20 am and 40 and 52 were very well plowed. German Church between 40 and 52 was "ok" but not great. Overall, a very easy commute from Lawrence to New Pal. I see a lot of you at the Wellness Center, so just a heads up, they are closed which was disappointing because their parking lot is perfectly plowed. Have a great day - Dr Fisher

Hi, this is Dr. Fisher. I know some of you have sick children and you are wondering, "Do we need to go out in this to have them seen?". For babies and kids older than 3 months, the height of a fever is not an emergency! The most common question I get is, "What temperature do we have to go to the ER?" There is no specific temp that makes you need to go to the ER. What is more important is how your kid is doing. One of my many motos is "Treat your kid, not a degree!" So, if your child is having trouble breathing, can't stay hydrated, is truly lethargic and not just tired, then they need to get to an ER or medcheck. Also, once you take their temperature today, and verify they have a fever 100.4 or higher, stop taking it!! All it does is increase your anxiety and all I need to know is if you had a fever during the 24 hour period.

For tomorrow, and all snow days, just a few tips. Snow days I am not as uptight about being on time. We understand it is impossible to know how long it will take to get to the office. Please take your time, be safe, and if it is dangerous, turn around and go home unless it is an emergency. Also, we don't "count" no shows on severe snow days, which are rare, but this one is severe! If you can't come, no worries, just message us through the portal or cancel your appointment through the portal. We have plenty of spots available Tuesday and Wednesday. Lastly, if your portal is not working, please call us tomorrow and we will help fix it. We need to get all those up and running smoothly.

Have a great snow day!!
Dr. Fisher

Cold is on way and looks like it is going to stay a while.
So, let's talk cold and car seats. Winter coats and thick clothing should not be worn in car seats underneath the car seat harness because they leave the harness too loose to be effective in a crash.
For Babies: Keeping babies warm in the winter takes a little extra effort, from the tiny gloves and hats to blankets and layers. You can tuck a blanket around your child in their car seat, or purchase the cover, fitted blanket, or canopy designed and tested by your car seat manufacturer for your specific model.
Warm pajamas are an easy go-to for babies, especially the type with convertible footies that can be folded over. Just make sure there’s no bunched-up fabric that might prevent the buckle from fastening correctly.
For Toddlers and Older Children
The backward coat trick is a parenting hack. After securing them in the car seat, turn the coat around and put it on backward (with arms through the armholes), so the coat serves as a blanket resting on top of the harness.
Dress children in layers, such as a “base” layer with cold-proof gear, followed by a sweatshirt. You can also look for fleece zip-up jackets that offer warmth without bulk.
As always, make sure your car seat is installed in a backseat per the manufacturer's directions. We want these babies to stay warm, but we also want them to stay safe!
