All children will balk at putting down their favorite video game or doing their chores from time to time. But, if it seems your child is genuinely confused by the directions you give or seems to misunderstand you, it’s a good idea to consult with a speech therapist to see if your child is having difficulty understanding spoken language.

A speech therapist can give you and your child strategies to help make daily routines run smoother such as breaking down directions into smaller chunks and using visual schedules to help your child gain more independence.

Hey everyone! Have you ever thought about the important connection between language and literacy? Being able to read and write is essential for success in almost every aspect of life, and it's important to remember that these skills are built on a foundation of language.

We all know the importance of reading to young children. (Check out my post from January 25th for a great how-to on this.) But, did you know that the relationship goes the other way as well. As we read, we learn new vocabulary, sentence structures, and writing styles. We become better equipped to express ourselves and engage in more sophisticated problem solving and conversations.

This is why it is critical to get early intervention in both language AND reading as soon as we think there might be a problem.They build on each other and they stagnate together if we don't help as soon as possible!

When children have persistent speech sound disorders they may develop difficulties with the phonological skills necessary for reading and writing. We should not have to wait for children to fail! We KNOW what children need to learn to read and we KNOW that 95% (that is all but people with the most severe disabilities) of children can learn to read ON GRADE LEVEL! Students with speech and language needs are AT RISK for reading difficulties, but WE KNOW they can learn to read too!

My weeks are VERY busy in my school based speech therapy job, so weekend mornings are my Provide SLP time. I’m learning so much. (Think: HIPPA compliance, logo design, and PLLCs) But as I was making my coffee this morning, this mug (a gift from a former student intern I trained) reminded me that speech and communication are what I know best! Does anyone out there know what a fricative and a stop are!? Sound Wall folks!???
