Emily, SUNY New Paltz Nutritionist

Emily, SUNY New Paltz Nutritionist Emily Ferencik is the Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist for SUNY New Paltz, working with students, faculty/staff, teams and organizations on campus.

I have been with SUNY New Paltz since September 2013 and feel so lucky to have landed here. I am a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, I did my graduate and undergraduate studies at in Nutrition and Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta. I am also Holistic Health Coach, trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. My personal wellness journey has been a long and winding road, and as I tell everyone I work with, the process is beautiful but it is not linear! Through all of the ups, downs, and experiences gained I have developed a passion for wellness, indescribable zest for life, and true love for acting as a guide for others on their path. On campus I work a variety of capacities, spending much of my time doing one on one counseling with students, faculty and staff on nutrition and wellness. I also facilitate two wellness related student organizations, develop programming for our student athletes, work with campus sustainability and closely with dining services, as well as with students to put on programming for residence halls and various organizations. I am on our employee wellness committee and Farm to SUNY team. The main tenants of my practice are bio-indivudality and a truly holistic approach: I treat every person as the unique individual that they are and realize there is no one size fits all solution. I treat the whole person - mind body and spirit - meaning I go beyond just food to cover all of the factors that influence our well being. My office is located in Hasbrouck Dining Hall on the second level and I'm on campus 5 days a week. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to work together!

If you have tendency toward extremes like I do, this article may shed some light on the subject of finding balance with exercise, but the pattern certainly extends beyond just exercise. How we approach one thing is often how we approach many others! Something that can be so healthy and nourishing pushed too far has the potential to throw us off balance. I struggle with this everyday! And my work has showed that I am in good company. It's a moment by moment journey - keep checking in coming back home to yourself.

This seemingly healthy practice could cause your body to hold on to extra pounds.

WELCOME BACK!! Summer is the best and it's hard to return to structured schedules...but thank goodness New Paltz makes it easy to get back in the groove, being the amazing and inspiring place it is and all.

SUGGESTIONS REQUESTED: I need to do some tabling around campus in dining halls and at the farmer's market and such and would like to get some nifty and useful little wellness related item to hand out. Ideas?? That are not pedometers or water bottles (with much appreciation for all the pedometers and water bottles we have all accumulated over the years) :)

"Some things about our modern existence are screwy and ridiculous, and when we spend our days sitting down, completely isolated from nature, from other humans (in the flesh), from edible plants and animals in their original packaging (absent some fur, perhaps), problems arise. You can’t expect that ignoring the reality of the environmental inputs that shaped our genome can lead to anything but poor health and happiness. Finding modern corollaries that create some of those same environmental inputs really seems to help solve most of our health and lifestyle problems. “Grok” is a helpful frame of reference.

But you don’t need to wear a loin cloth. You don’t need to leave the city and build a home in the forest using primitive skills (that’d be pretty awesome as a summer home, though!)."

Another great one from Mark Sisson of Primal. PS - You don't have to be Paleo/Primal etc to appreciate the message of this article :)

Most of us go Primal to solve problems created by Conventional Wisdom. The importance of whole grains and daily cardio, the dangers of dietary fat and animal protein, the primacy of carbohydrates for “energy,”—these untruths are promulgated so widely and fail so conclusively that you can’t help but…

Eeek how times have changed for me - not so long ago I would have certainly scoffed at an article on how detox cleanses are more harmful than helpful. At the same time I would have probably been desperately seeking more detox miracle cleanses to fix the depleted state I existed in for so many years. But thankfully my more recent lease on life has been to live more from my inner experience and less from following someone else's rules. I don't know what anyone else's truth is - but I know that when I loosened the reigns on my fanatic food rules, I got my life back.

If you spent any part of this month on a cleanse or detox diet, at some point in the process you likely felt run-down, irritable, depressed, nauseous, or fixated on food. Maybe you also experienced headaches, diarrhea, or dizziness that was enough to make you want to give up. The makers of these
