Dr. Matt Wintersteen was honored to give the keynote address at the Drs. Theresa and Charles Yeo Writing Prize Reception and Reading last night. This year’s theme was Discovering Joy. His keynote offered a compelling juxtaposition between this year’s writing theme and the work of the David Farber ASPIRE Center.

“Joy lives with misery. Joy lives with sadness. Joy lives with pain. Joy lives with sorrow. The question is whether or not you have the vision and courage to see it through the darkness.”

Dr. Lucas Zullo was recently invited to present at Jefferson’s Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds where he taught about evidence-based approaches to su***de prevention in the Emergency Department setting. Attendees included Emergency Medicine faculty and a range of medical trainees working in the Emergency Department. Discussions with attendees highlighted the intersection of substance use and mental health, and the importance of leading with empathy when supporting patients and their loved ones.
These conversations are essential to shaping a more understanding, responsive, and human-centered approach to care. 💙

April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. There are varied and diverse experiences across the autism spectrum. Nearly 80% of autistic children have at least one co-occurring mental health condition—such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD—and nearly half have two or more. Research also shows that 87.8% of autistic individuals report lifetime suicidal thoughts, 56.3% report non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and nearly one-third (31.0%) report a su***de attempt, underscoring the critical need for accessible, responsive mental health support.
This month, we recognize the validity of these experiences and the importance of equitable access to supports and services. Together, we can create a society where autistic individuals are supported, understood, and affirmed.

On this International Transgender Day of Visibility, it’s vital to uplift trans lives while addressing stark realities like elevated su***de risks. A 2023 study from the Williams Institute at UCLA found that 81% of transgender adults in the U.S. have thought about su***de, 42% of transgender adults have made su***de attempts, and 56% have engaged in non-suicidal self-injury over their lifetimes.

Not that long ago, a woman could be locked in a hospital simply for being ‘too emotional’ or wanting to leave a marriage. Her feelings were treated as a problem to control, not a story to understand.

That history is one reason many women still fear speaking honestly about suicidal thoughts: ‘Will they think I’m crazy? Will they take my choices away?’

At the David Farber ASPIRE Center, we work to make care feel different: more honest conversations, more choices, and more respect. Asking for help should never mean giving up your voice.

For a long time, ‘hysteria’ was used to silence women instead of helping them. Women were mocked, ignored, or locked away when they were actually scared, grieving, or surviving violence.

That history still echoes today when a woman is told she’s ‘overreacting’ or ‘just wants attention.’ Those phrases can keep people from opening up about suicidal thoughts and getting help.

At the David Farber ASPIRE Center, we believe women when they say they’re not okay. It’s always worth taking seriously.
