This is copied from a colleagues page. We all need your help !!
Dear FB friends and family, I’m asking for your help.
There’s a bill sitting on our governor’s desk against the optometrists in FL. Senate Bill 230 has passed through the senate against certain professions from using the title of “Doctor“ and “Physician.” Apparently there are some PhD educators who call themselves Doctors in the educational settings, and then in medical settings are convincing patients that they are MDs. Therefore the SB230 was passsed, however Optometrists were targeted. Dentists, podiatrists, chiropractors can still use their Doctor titles. Later in the House of Representatives, it was changed to exclude optometrists, but was changed again to include us not to be called Doctors, and was passed. Apparently the president of the Senate comes from a family of ophthalmologists and has a personal vendetta against us, optometrists.
This Bill now sits on the governor’s desk.
I’ve been in practice for 32 years. My diploma says Doctor of Optometry. If this bill passes, I can’t call myself Doctor. It will be $10K felony fine, and then I lose my license and can’t practice. This bill has far more negative effects on my optometry profession besides a title. You can google this bill, Florida SB230, and read more about it in detail.
What I’m asking my family and friends, for 5 minutes of your time. If I’ve ever personally helped you, I’m hoping you’d help me and my profession in FL. Write the FL governor ASAP, and call his office. (The capital is breaking for summer soon) Please be professional and ask him to please VETO SB230
To my colleagues or new graduates from other states , your state may be next. Help us out here and write our governor, and I’ll help you out, too. This is just so bazaar, it sickens me, and I just don’t understand or believe this could be happening. Makes no sense …thank you for reading this.
