Seeing tiny gnats flying around your houseplants? Those β€œUFIs” (unidentified flying insects) may be fungus gnats, one of the most common houseplant pests.

Fungus gnats often arrive on new plants or plants that spent the summer outdoors. While adults are annoying, their larvae live in overwatered potting soil, feeding on decaying organic matter.

The most effective control?
βŽπŸ’§ Cut back on watering and let the top two inches of soil dry out between waterings. Most houseplants need less water during winter.

Use yellow sticky cards to monitor adults, and if needed, treat larvae with products containing Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti), such as Mosquito Bits.
