What’s in My Surgery Bag? More Than You’d Think 💼🔬

From breast markers to a Bluetooth speaker, my surgery bag is basically a Mary Poppins situation.
You never know what you’ll need in the OR, so I come prepared for everything. 😄

The essentials?
Surgical tools, patient markers, and yes... random office supplies that somehow save the day 😂

Oh, and my 15-year old surgical headlight from that’s been with me since day one of my practice. It’s survived TWO washing machine cycles and still works perfectly, now that’s quality.
If that’s not a testimonial to durability, I don’t know what is.

Never underestimate the power of being overprepared.
What surprised you most? 😄

Let’s talk about what they DON’T tell you about Plastic Surgery boards. 📋
I’m not giving you the sanitized textbook version. This is the real strategy residents actually use to pass, both the written and oral board exams.
Here’s what you need to know:

WRITTEN BOARDS?
Study old exam questions. Thousands of them. Over and over until you can’t get them wrong.
Every resident has access to the question bank, use it relentlessly. That’s how you pass.

ORAL BOARDS?
It starts with your case collection period (first 12-24 months of practice).
Choose cases strategically. Good variety, but avoid high-risk/high-complication electives that could make you look reckless.
Complications will happen, you’re a young surgeon, but pick cases you can defend confidently.

STUDY STRATEGY?
Master the 15-20 high-yield topics cold.
Study every known hypothetical oral board scenario (yes, the list exists. Everyone knows what they are).
Work with study partners. Anticipate every curve ball. Take practice rounds seriously.
If you can stay calm there, you’ll be calm during the real exam.

EXAM WEEK?
Arrive 2-3 days early.
ALONE. No family, no distractions.
Splurge on hotel and food (think about the cost of retaking the exam).
Hydrate, eat clean, light exercise, sleep.

Final 24 hours?
Digital detox. No news, no social media. Monk on a mountaintop vibes.

This isn’t about being the smartest resident.
It’s about being the most prepared and having the best judgment under pressure.

Whether you’re a plastic surgery resident preparing for written boards, in your case collection period, or studying for oral boards, save this guide. You’ll need it.

What stresses you most about the plastic surgery board exam process?
Let’s talk about it in the comments

OZEMPIC FACE IS REAL 🚨 | What GLP-1s Do To Your Skin & Body

We need to talk about what’s happening with Ozempic, Wegovy, and other GLP-1 medications... 💉

Yes, they work for weight loss. But what NO ONE is talks about the consequences:
- Rapid facial volume loss (“Ozempic face”)
- Skin laxity and sagging tissue
- Accelerated aging appearance
- Loss of facial fat pads that give you a youthful look
- Soft tissue deflation across the entire body

The problem?
When you lose weight this fast, your skin doesn’t have time to adapt. You’re left with excess skin, hollowed features, and an aged appearance that can add 10+ years to your face.

The good news?
There ARE solutions to restore volume and address these changes, but prevention is key.

Want to know how to protect your skin?
Drop a 💊 below and I’ll share my protocol.

Stop signing surgical consent forms without reading them.

6-10 pages, but signed in only 30 seconds. No questions, no real understanding, just a signature.
This happens too often.

Here’s what you need to know:
These forms should list almost ALL major and minor potential complications, even those that would rarely , if ever occur. You still deserve an understanding of what you’re signing.
As Dr Fugo says, “Surgery is a big deal. Social media and sensationalism aside, it’s surgery. Complications, by definition are unforeseen events. If we knew when they were going to occur, we would be able to avoid them entirely. Every patient needs a clear understanding of the journey they are embarking on, both the amazing and the undesirable sides”.

This goes both ways!
For surgeons & med students: Take time to explain. Real consent means real conversation.
For patients: Ask questions. Slow down. Don’t put your head in the sand. If a surgeon minimizes your concerns or can’t provide satisfactory answers, don’t walk away….run.

Informed consent should be exactly that: INFORMED.

Blessed with having both sons home unexpectedly for a night of decompression from school.
Sometimes they just need their own bed and the comfort of home to recharge.

Heading back to campus this morning, couldn’t help but notice one son is following in my footsteps.
The other clearly has more refined taste 😂

Can you guess who’s who?

What I eat in a day as a plastic surgeon 🍏🥒
You want healthy skin? Start from the inside.

I’m always telling patients about skincare routines, treatments, procedures... but here’s what I don’t talk about enough: what you PUT in your body matters just as much as what you put ON it.

This is what a typical day looks like for me.
Every meal is intentional. Every choice supports skin health, energy for long surgery days, and recovery.
