Not all behavior is a choice-sometimes it’s a child’s nervous system asking for help🤍 Sensory overload happens when the body receives more input than it can manage. This can look like meltdowns, shutting down, running away, or covering ears and eyes. These moments are often misunderstood as “misbehavior,” when in reality, the body is overwhelmed and unable to cope. When sensory overload is treated as behavior, it can lead to more frustration,escalation, and less learning. Occupational therapy helps by identifying sensory triggers, teaching regulation strategies, building coping skills, and supporting families every step of the way.

Just because your child does not qualify for school-based services does not mean they don’t benefit from support🤍 School eligibility requires meeting very specific criteria and demonstrating an educational impact. Many children fall just outside those guidelines-even when families notice challenges with motor skills, sensory regulation, daily participation. At Little Stars Pediatric Therapy, we offer both insurance-based and private pay options to support children with areas such as fine motor skills, sensory integration, and visual motor integration. Early support can help strength skills, build confidence, and prevent small gaps from becoming bigger challenges over time. We’re excited to introduce Alyssa Lewandowski, a third-year occupational therapy student who will be joining Little Stars to complete her doctoral capstone project at the end of January ✨Alyssa grew up in Wappingers Falls and is completing the final steps of her degree close to home under the mentorship of Isabella Saffioti-Shea, owner and occupational therapist of Little Stars. Isabella is also a graduate of Western New England University’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. In collaboration with Little Stars, she will be leading her Doctoral Experiential (DEx) capstone project, “Holding on Tight: Exploring Occupational Therapy Strategies for Perinatal Musculoskeletal Conditions.” This project is a telehealth perinatal ergonomics education program designed to support new mothers in preventing musculoskeletal conditions that may impact caregiving, while also contributing to research on the role of occupational therapy in women’s and maternal health 🤍. Over the next 14 weeks, Alyssa may also be involved in additional projects throughout the practice. We’re thrilled to have her as part of the Little Stars community and look forward to seeing her work come to life!
