Do Gratitude Lists Work at Reducing Burnout?

They Sure Do!

In one study, published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, medical students who practiced gratitude by writing down three things they were thankful for each day reported lower levels of burnout, perceived stress, and negative emotions compared to a control group who did not practice gratitude.

Rosenthal, J. et al. (2011). Gratitude and well-being among first-year medical students. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 17(4), 281-287. doi: 10.1089/acm.2010.0455

Another study, published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, found that nurses who engaged in a gratitude intervention, which involved writing down three things they were grateful for each day, reported lower levels of burnout and higher levels of job satisfaction compared to a control group who did not engage in the intervention.

Mills, J. et al. (2018). The effect of gratitude on burnout and well-being among nurses and physicians. Journal of Holistic Nursing, 36(1), 6-14. doi: 10.1177/0898010117713352

Behavioral Economics plays a critical role in motivating patients to change their behavior.

However, the key to behavioral change is

building a strong connection with patients.

Behavioral Economics also plays a role in developing a strong relationship with patients.

What do I mean?

Imagine a random person on the street gave you advice on how to diet by using nudges.

Vs

Your mother or father gave you advice on how to diet using nudges.

The latter is far more likely to result in behavior change.

Nudges work best in conjunction with a strong relationship between provider and patient.

If you are interested in learning more about hoe behavioral economics can help you as a provider develop a strong relationship with patients, check out the link in the comments section.

3 Steps to Reducing Burnout in Healthcare Organizations

1) Obtain authentic feedback from staff members in your organization on reducing burnout and implement their suggestions.

2) Find ways to reduce the burden of non-patient care activities on healthcare providers. For example, try new technologies to reduce documentation demands or delegate the responsibilities of dealing with insurance companies to non-provider staff.

3) Improve communication between leadership and healthcare providers by avoiding micromanagement, explaining your reasoning to providers when you differ on a decision, and demonstrating appreciation for healthcare providers on a consistent authentic basis.

One of the barriers to step 1 is that staff members are often fearful of sharing their suggestions for change in the presence of leadership out of fear of repercussions.
Also, company surveys are tedious, and staff feel like their suggestions won't be heard off a staff survey.

I often speak about CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Theory, as a valuable tool in combatting burnout and improving emotional intelligence.

The concept behind CBT is that our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions are intrinsically linked to one another.

If you can change one of these elements, it will impact the other 2.

Often, our thoughts are led by our emotions, which express extremism.

For example, statements like; my boss hates me, my employees hate me, my spouse hates me, express extreme feelings.

All these statements are quite extreme, because our emotions are leading the way.

If we take a step back when we express black and white extremism, and realize that it just isn't true, it helps regulate our internal and external emotional expression.

Your boss probably doesn't hate you, employees probably don't hate you, and your spouse probably doesn't hate you.

They might not be happy with you at the moment, but that doesn't mean they hate you.

To learn more about how my innovative workshops, coaching, and consulting can help you and your team reduce burnout and improve leadership/communication, dm me.

If an organization wants to combat burnout, leadership needs to be attuned to the signs of burnout.

One sign of burnout that I experienced personally and is also documented in the literature, is a steep decline in productivity.

When employees are burnt out, they feel fatigued and hopeless, and that impacts productivity.

My own experience as a burnt-out homecare physical therapist included a significant drop in productivity.

I felt like I didn't have the energy to see the number of patients I had once see earlier in my career.

When an administrator sees a steep drop in productivity, it is a red flag for burnout.

Instead of being angry or yelling at that clinician, explore how they are feeling and come up with a plan to combat burnout.

In doing so, you will ultimately improve productivity and create a healthy work environment.
