What is grief?
Grief is the physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological expression of loss.
Bereavement is an example of a loss. However, we experience a multitude of losses throughout our lifetimes - losses may include the death of a loved one or a beloved pet, the loss of a significant relationship, or loss of a job, career, or home. It can be a loss of personal freedom, loss of identity or of one's self. It can be loss of independence due to a disability or a medical condition. There are countless examples of losses, and each one is felt and experienced differently from person to person.
No one's grief is the same, as no one's experience is the same. Grief is like a fingerprint - it's unique, just like you. Your grieving process, no matter your loss or losses, may show up as: anger, resentment, irritability, inability to focus, feelings of numbness, anxiety or fear. For some, there is overwhelming sadness, while others shut completely down. People can experience sleep disturbance, difficulty with eating, difficulty managing emotions, or racing thoughts. All of these feelings are absolutely normal and part of the grieving process to your loss, no matter what your loss is.
It is OK to not be ok and it's OK to grieve your loss your way. However when grief is not addressed, and, rather, suppressed, dismissed, shamed or stunted, it can cause depression, anxiety, and other conditions that complicate your life. These conditions include post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and major depression, and as they arise they can bring about distress and complicate pre-existing conditions. These can at times make or break a relationship, family, or a community.
My job is to help you navigate those waters and come to terms with your losses, so acceptance can facilitate the process of healing.
We understand that in this difficult time, everyone is grieving. So, my team and I have made a commitment to ensure that all who seek services will not be turned away.
