There are so many misconceptions about back injuries that I hear from patients.
I’m not sure when it happened, but for some reason feeling your back muscles is bad, but feeling any other muscle after using it is good.
Here are a few facts about back injuries you may not know:
1️⃣ Deadlifts are not BAD for your back and if dosed correctly can be an excellent rehab exercise.
2️⃣ If you are doing an exercise that involves hinging at your hips you’ll feel your back working and that’s OKAY.
3️⃣ The research isn’t as clear cut as you may think about lifting with a rounded back so if you are more efficient pulling with some rounding that’s FINE.
4️⃣ Back pain is pretty common with most people experiencing it in their life. Often it will go away if you remain active around the discomfort.
5️⃣ Not sure how anyone is able to measure the stability of a spine during an exercise, but core stability is just one type of rehab exercise amongst many that can be effective.
6️⃣ At the bottom of your squat your spine moves into some rounding no matter how straight it looks and you haven’t DIED.
Understanding that back pain is very common and happens to most people at some point is important when trying to reframe the perspective on this type of injury.
This new narrative of your spine being some weak, fragile structure that needs to be over protected is contributing to this epidemic of back pain.
Your spine is pretty damn robust and capable. It houses your spinal cord so of course we’ve adapted to have a structure that protects it.
Train your back like any other muscle and you’ll be better prepared for whatever activities and tasks life throws at it!
