How to feel less overwhelmed in 2020?

With this new reality with our kids at home 24/7, trying to squeeze in our work, the household duties, spending 24/7 with your family in the same room 🙄... I don’t know about you but for me it’s not easy everyday. Monday I can smash it but by Tuesday I'm wondering how I’m going to survive the rest of the week.

When we become a mama we always worry about our kids no matters their age, that’s just the way it is. That’s why is so important to have good habits around our sleep, and the tools to manage the stress and anxiety that will keep us awake at night.

We tend to compare our current sleep to the lack of sleep we had when our kids were newborns, so obviously our current situation is not that bad! But the question is can you make your sleep even better?

A big conversation in the motherhood journey is HOW MUCH SLEEP we are all getting.

Rest and sleep are often at the bottom of our priority list. Not that we don’t want a good night sleep, it's just that other things come first such as:

- catching up on work
- watching a tv show
- cleaning
- scrolling through social media on our phone
- thinking/ worrying
- trying to get our kids to sleep
- enjoying the silence

What I have learned over the years is that sleep is CRITICAL for our PHYSICAL & MENTAL HEALTH and it should be at the TOP of our list.

BUT if I don’t make the effort to prioritise it, it will always be at the bottom. Some people manage to get a good 8h restorative night without thinking about it. Others, like myself and other mamas, have so much in their head at night and struggle to quiet their mind or simply have kids 😜 and for us having a good night sleep requires a little bit more work.

Let me tell you that it’s soooo worth it! I take care of my sleep every single day. It’s a non-negotiable. You can call me grandma, I don’t mind 😝 because that is the only way to be my best self, for me and my family.

Mama, are you a bedtime procrastinator? 📱

It's the evening, your kids are fast asleep, the house is quiet, and you’re finally about to crawl into bed.

You know that you’re tired and you’ve probably being waiting for this time since the moment you woke up that morning. But you can’t help it. You check your phone for one last mindless scroll through social media, respond to a few emails, or read the latest article about COVID and school reopening. And just like that; you’ve lost 1h of sleep.

If you’re ready to put your bedtime procrastination to rest, the first step is admitting that your current habit is worth changing.

💤A regular bedtime routine will train your brain to know when it’s time for rest.

💤Create a good sleep environment: keep it dark and the temperature cool.

💤Avoid caffeine after 12pm and stop alcohol in the evening.

💤Skip the phone, tablets, and laptops in the bedroom. The blue light will make you more alert, messing with your body’s internal clock and sleep cycle.

How the hell can I meditate with my kids around?

For a long time, I pictured mediation as an image of serenity, a vision of a person sitting cross-legged in a mat (like this photo), eyes closed and a mind relaxed. Which is why the image of meditating amidst the chaos of having young children at home seemed so improbable to me. But having kids IS my reality, and I really wanted to be able to mediate. So I changed my expectations.

👉🏻 You don’t have to mediate first thing in the morning if it doesn’t work with your kids. You can do it at anytime.

👉🏻Focus on your breath. Simply by focusing on on deep, steady breath while you’re changing the sheet or making lunch, you can counteract the harmful short and long term effects that the stress response will have on your body.

👉🏻 Reassign your mediation location: you can meditate in your car 5min before picking up your children, at work during your lunch break, on the bus, etc..

👉🏻Practice mindfulness. At the playground since you’ve to watch your kids anyway, use the time to be fully present. Practice mindfulness with each sense. Listen to the cars going by or the wind blowing through the trees.

💫 No one needs meditation and mindfulness in their day more than moms. Yet we can often feel incapable of fitting the practice into our days. So remember it doesn’t matter how and when you meditate, what’s important is taking few minutes to be fully present with yourself 💚

Happy Wednesday Mamas!

I spent 7h last night at the emergency room with my 3 years old (all good now) and the night before I only slept about 4h so I’m a hot mama mess today 😏.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION is just awful. The truth is that I will probably do my day like nothing happen because that’s what moms do... we are strong, resilient and we just keep going.

This is just a reminder on WHY SLEEP is damn IMPORTANT for our health.

So from tonight I will make sure to re-prioritise my sleep in order to get my energy back again! Life is way better when we are full of energy mamas ✨💫

If you are not prioritising yourself you are missing out on more than just "free time".

The idea behind taking some time for ourselves when we are moms is simply taking care of our mental wellbeing and making sure we don't forget we are not just a mom.

Being a mom is hard, it takes all your energy, time, sleep, and adds some stress.

I know it's easier said than done BUT finding some time for yourself to recharge, to reconnect, to catch up with a friend, IS PRIMORDIAL and it will make the journey of motherhood very different✨
