May is Mental Health Awareness Month. To honor this important topic, that I am so deeply passionate about, I’ve created a 7 day challenge to repeat each week this month. Take this focused time to prioritize your own mental health & self-care by bringing daily awareness & mindfulness to each of the following. They don’t take long to do, but what they do is carve out dedicated time to tune into how you’re feeling, mind-body-soul & creates a practice of, pausing, “checking in” with yourself & making the necessary adjustments to live your best life.

Practice makes progress. Not perfection. There’s no such thing. Instinctually, we know that. So, why are we so hard on ourselves then? As someone who has struggled with perfectionism her whole life, it can be a daunting change of mind-set and expectation. But, like yoga, it’s a practice. A continuous journey of letting go - When we combine the two-that release of perfectionism with joy of practice, we end up with progress, inside and out that just….sticks…..with no judgment or self-criticism. This week we’re tapping right into the heart of our childhood spirit. Whether you’re 7 or 70-you’re only as old as you feel, so the story goes. Wednesday 9:45 a.m. and Friday 9:30 a.m. Luna Power Yoga

Many cultures celebrate the symbolism of the beloved dog. In Hindu mythology, Adho Mukha Svanasana, affectionately referred to as, Downward Facing Dog is an asana with roots to Lord Shiva. Shiva, the Hindu God associated with death and transformation is also known for embracing the outcasts and misfits of society. As dogs were considered part of the lower caste system, Shiva felt a kinship with dogs and found comfort with them. Downward facing dog, a cherished, familiar pose in yoga practice, represents that connection. Dogs, also considered to be the guardians of the underworld are the gatekeepers to heaven on the journey to rebirth. They can help us connect with our keen sense, are a constant reminder of unconditional love and show us how to honor exactly where we are in life. This week we pay homage to Adho Mukha Svanasana & this very loyal friend.

This time of year is all about the holiday spirit & hustle & bustle. Which, is why it’s even more important to nurture our own spirits & soothe our souls in this time of giving & receiving. Remind yourself that it’s OK to take of yourself, carve out a little time for yourself & remember what feeds your soul & brings to joy. This week’s practice is devoted to giving the gift of self.

Fear has many faces. Whether it’s fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of loss or lack of growth, fear of taking a chance, change or what we must endure. Sometimes, we may even have to muster up the ability to face that fear while still being afraid. What we must keep reminding ourselves of is, fear does not make us weak or any less brave. It is a signal to get out of our heads, ground down & nurture our root chakra until we are able to feel the truth. This week we do just that & release that energy into freeing up the calm, strength & fearlessness that reside in all of us.

Before we dive into those family gatherings & Thanksgiving festivities this week, we take a little quiet time on the mat for ourselves, dig deep into the present & raise abundant awareness of all that we have. Gratitude is a practice we can engage in daily, by simply waking up, looking beyond ourselves & consciously thanking the universe for a few precious things we have in our lives. It’s a wonderful way to start your day, puts everything into perspective & immediately brings you into the fortune of the present moment. How do we go about expanding our minds, our hearts, our bodies, our breath? What about our range of motion? Our joy? Our thinking? Our views? Knowledge? Gratitude? Patience? Acts of kindness? Opportunities? Interests? Faith? There are so many areas of our life which allow for the practice of expansion and moving out of our comfort zone in order to transform and grow. This week, we expand physically and emotionally to discover how this idea resonates within each of us.

I’ve been trying really hard to practice this recently & in full transparency, damn, it can be challenging. Definitely, a journey in progress. All we can do is try with honest effort though, right?

A shift in our thinking can change our entire perspective. Where we often feel the weight of, “I have to….” we often forget the privilege of, “I get to…..” When we ask ourselves, “Why is this happening to me?” do we ever rephrase it to, “What is this supposed to be teaching me?” Where we can often focus on the the wrongs in our life, we can quickly forget the things that are so very right. Though no easy feat, perspective is something you can control & it can either hold you down or set you free. It can make you remain stationary or move & discover. Stay stagnant or change & transform. It’s all how you view it & ride the waves. The choice, is ultimately yours. Flow with me this week Wednesday at 9:45 & Friday at 9:30 Luna Power Yoga

‘Drishti’ in meditation & asana is - our view or gaze/focal point. There are 9 of them, each with their own intention & energy. When we find our drishti, we then are able to hold our gaze. A focused gaze supports a focused mind, heightened awareness & brings us more in tune with our alignment. This week we concentrate on the importance of focus & where we place it. Where we focus our gaze, our mind, our breath, our energy, our concentration, etc. takes us inward so that can we choose what we send outward. Digging into Hindu mythology this week, we are honoring Hanuman, the divine Monkey God who lost sight of his unlimited power & potential, but overcame self-doubt by remembering who he truly was & the magic he possessed.
