We’ve all heard the stereotypes—passed on through jokes or gritted teeth—about the different generations. “Baby boomers are stuck in their ways and reinforce hierarchy.” “Gen Xers are off on their own playing a video game.” “Millennials think they should have it all but don’t want to work for it.” “Gen Z thinks the world exists on a smartphone screen.”

Are these stereotypes helpful? Of course not. And the year we’re born is only one of countless factors that shape who we are. Yet our age and everything that comes with it—world events, cultural trends, and technologies, to name a few—influence how we’re raised and see the world. And we bring all of that to our work.

We chose to write about the topic of intergenerational teams because we think about it and talk about it a lot. The CAPC team, like many health care teams, ranges in age from colleagues in their twenties to those in their seventies. To be effective, we need to leverage that age diversity for its strength while creating an environment that can accommodate the different styles and expectations of the group.

New virtual clinical workshop 'Optimizing Buprenorphine for Pain and Substance Use Disorder in Patients with Serious Illness: A Case-Based Approach': https://ow.ly/vt7J50XfQ40

This two-hour, case-based, interactive clinical workshop offers clinicians (physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), and registered nurses) practical information on using buprenorphine to manage pain in patients living with a serious illness and substance use disorder. The workshop will cover:

🔹 An overview of buprenorphine and how to take advantage of its unique pharmacology for patients with substance use disorder
🔹 The complexities of managing acute pain while on buprenorphine
🔹 Evidence-based dosing, with guidance on opioid rotations to and from buprenorphine
🔹 Practical tips on effective prescriptions and navigating buprenorphine access

The workshop concludes with an open question and answer session for clinicians to ask about all aspects of buprenorphine and share clinical experiences.

New Publication: The Case for Palliative Care in Kidney Care

Despite facing high rates of distressing symptoms—including fatigue, pruritus, and pain—people living with advanced kidney disease are far less likely than those with cancer to receive appropriate pain and symptom management. And fewer than 10% of older adults receiving dialysis report having had conversations about their goals of care.

The Case for Palliative Care in Kidney Care, a new publication from CAPC and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), emphasizes the critical need to integrate palliative care services into the treatment of patients with advanced kidney disease. CAPC and NKF call on nephrology practices, dialysis centers, and health systems to strengthen their palliative care capabilities through clinician training, collaboration with specialty teams, and systemic changes that prioritize patient-centered outcomes—and offer resources to help meet this goal.

In collaboration with the Stephen S. Elbaum Family Center for Caregiving at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, CAPC's new Caregiver Support Program Implementation Toolkit provides resources to help hospitals and other health care organizations design, launch, and grow evidence-based, financially sustainable caregiver support programs.

The toolkit includes:

: Pain is more than a physical sensation. , the International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage.” This definition highlights two important points: first, pain is sensory and emotional; second, pain can be experienced in the absence of an identifiable pathology.
