07/22/2022

Have you noticed an increase in inflammation, food sensitivities, skin issues like rosacea or eczema, joint pain or brain fog as you’ve entered your 40s?
This is a very common hallmark of perimenopause and fluctuating or waning estrogen is part of the problem.
So many women tell me that what they used to do just doesn’t work anymore😩
They can’t tolerate as many foods without digestive issues or inflammation.

Their skin is now more sensitive to the products they’ve always loved.

Their joints are more painful and creaky.

Hormone issues like endometriosis, PCOS and fibroids are getting worse.

Their high intensity workouts and spin classes now cause them to feel wiped out for days.

Or they just lack the motivation to even show up at the gym because they feel tired, have a worse mood and lower motivation.
Lower estrogen may be contributing to these symptoms though various mechanisms including an uptick in inflammation.
I always call inflammation the “great hormone mess maker” because it will impact the function of all your hormones.
As well, inflammation based symptoms can show up literally anywhere in your body including acid reflux, bloating, skin issues, brain fog, depression or anxiety, less motivation, joint pain, exercise intolerance – just to name a few.
This can lead us to wonder why we feel OK some days and not others.
Some of that is the fluctuations of estrogen during perimenopause and some of it may be that this hormonally driven inflammation is worse when you eat certain foods – often ones that you used to tolerate just fine.
Should you get a food sensitivity test in this case?

Maybe…but there’s a host of problems with them and you need to understand what you’re getting with these various tests.
I do use these in my practice, but they are rarely the first thing we do because food sensitivities are more a symptom vs. a root cause.
I cover all of that in the most recent episodes of the . #276 and #277 are out now, one more next week!
Have you had food testing?
Was it helpful?

My home is like an IV drip of oxytocin.
It’s my safe place, my happy place and my place of connection.
Not just to my family but to my feelings. I am someone that is really impacted and influenced by my space, the environment around me.
So I have always diligently created a space that nurtures where I’m at in life and what I need, how I want to feel.
I always say we need to grasp happiness every day and it’s so much easier when you’re in a space that feeds your 🤩
But doing that in a bigger space than I’ve ever had and trying as well to create the space Joe and the girls needed too was a lot!
Something about it being a house and finally not an apartment also felt so much more permanent and I honestly got pretty nervous as I made decisions about color and style.
I mean this was like a grown up’s house 😂
I had a ton of support and advice from my friend and she helped me get over my fear of choosing the bold color I really wanted, embracing my own style and going for it and she completely indulged my love of throw pillows💕
Her advice was the perfect example of - one of the from
On episode #268 of the Margo joined me and we covered the psychology of color, what to do if you can’t do a full renovation on a kitchen or bathroom now but need a little freshen, how to shop for the hard stuff like art and rugs and how we can all make our home a special place that brings us joy ❤️
Who says curtains and furniture and paint colors don’t affect hormones and happiness? Certainly not me!!!
How about you:

Home is just a place to hang your hat?

Or your space is everything when it comes to your mood and joy? 🙋‍♀️

Let me know!

I didn’t fall in love with strength training right away, but I certainly did in the end.
I came from the idea that exercise was a means to an end and the only end I was interested in was making my body smaller.
This always drove me to over exercise and under value strength and muscle mass.
Interestingly, even when I was successful in that, at my “smallest” and lowest weight it never brought me more confidence or happiness.
I was always scared of gaining or plateauing so there was never any settling in to the body I had to fight so hard for – literally fighting my hormones to keep it in a smaller size.
When I started lifting things changed – not necessarily for the better when it came to my body.
I got a bit bigger in the places I already struggled hard to love: my b***y and thighs.
But hormonally I had a regular cycle and slept better. My appetite and cravings were more normal and my mindset was a 180.
I felt strong, more at home in my body and I loved seeing myself grow more powerful.
It was like the healing I didn’t even know I needed when it came to my body image.
I grew to appreciate the curves and the bigger parts, maybe even like them a bit 🍑
That coupled with what we know to be true about muscles:

They make myokines that help us regulate inflammation and our immune system.

They are our reserve of insulin sensitivity and help us have a better, healthier metabolism.

And of course they help make our bones stronger which keeps us healthier and more independent as we age.
My advice to anyone hoping to heal body image issues, improve their metabolism and find their power is to lift weights.
I talk about all that and more including how to handle the biggest barriers to strength training (time, know how, getting bulky, etc.) in the latest episode of the
Tell me, do you love strength training?

If not, let me know why!

Despite how well your morning mediation goes, you will inevitably have a stressful moment some days.Ok most days, right?...
05/12/2022

Despite how well your morning mediation goes, you will inevitably have a stressful moment some days.
Ok most days, right? 😩
But when the stressor is over you likely still have energy (glucose, fatty acids) liberated by your stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline and DHEA) and you can use that energy to help you focus on what matters and have the energy to get it done.
However after that, you’ll want to put any of that excess energy to use. Exercise is the winner here.
It doesn’t need to be a full workout but a walk, a few squats or pushups or a quick dance party will put to use that liberated fuel and help stop your stress response – which is cool, cuz you no longer need those stress hormones.
Problem is we rarely are this deliberate about completing our stress response which contributes to our chronic, ongoing experience of stress and it’s fallout.
But if you’re stressed on repeat or now is not an appropriate time for a stress response (like oh say, lying in bed worried about if you’ll remember the right color of tights for your daughters’ dance performances this weekend 🙋‍♀️) you need to stop the stress hormone release and diffuse or resolve the stress response.
Your best bets here are anything that triggers your parasympathetic nervous response like getting your vagus nerve into action with singing, gargling, belly laughing or cold water.
Your next best bet – and my personal fav – is to trigger oxytocin, your feel good, loved up hormone that is the antidote to cortisol ❤️
Get your oxytocin flowing by hugging someone you love or EVEN THINKING about them! This will slow cortisol’s roll and help you get back into a more balanced hormonal and nervous system state.
These habits can help you make stress your friend and keep it from getting out of control and wreaking havoc on your hormones.
What do you do when you’re all worked up from stress?

05/08/2022

To all the hard working mamas, I hope you feel appreciated.
To all those in a difficult spot with your mother or your children, I hope you feel some peace.
To all of you feel disappointed, guilty, angry, frustrated, sad, grateful, joyful, indifferent, confused, lonely, ecstatic, loved - and everything and anything else, I see you.
My hope for you if you struggle with today for any reason that you can:
Find some grace wherever you are on the spectrum of a "mother relationship".
It can be so very hard and complicated and wonderful and awful - often in the span of an hour.
Mothering takes many forms and it's always hard work, hopefully a labor of love in some way.
I hope that if you need healing in a mothering relationship (as a daughter, mother, mother to be, hoping to be a mom, the list goes on) that you can find a safe space to do some unpacking and healing.
If you're feeling the joy of motherhood today, I hope you have the time and space to really soak up those sweet moments of appreciation and love.
If you're feeling let down or left out because you're underappreciated or being a mother hasn't worked out for you in some way - the list goes on from infertility to pregnancy loss to divorce to child loss to just feeling empty from giving so much to your family or community, to name just a few - I hope you can trust that you still matter and are seen, even if it's not being shown in the way you'd hoped.
I for one am solo parenting this weekend and this day has been so hard for me since I was a kid.
On the Official Mommy Day Off I'll still have to make breakfast, do the dishes, prep for the school week ahead, fold some laundry and probably referee a fight between them before the day is done.
But I also got homemade gifts and a ton of cuddles 🥰
If that doesn’t sum up mothering, what does 😂
So I’m feeling it all today ❤️
It can all be true. I feel a bit sad and a lot grateful, some disappointment and much joy.
So however you feel, don't make yourself wrong for it today - it's a seven layer dip of emotions for sure.
Complicated, messy and delicious.
Happiest Mother’s Day❤️
