Enhance Your Brain with Memory Improving Games
Everyone loves to play or at least loved to play as a kid but the majority of people has their inner child inside of them during their whole life. Someone use games as source of fun, someone is playing games to have a rest after a long day, sometimes people play games just to kill time in a bus. What is more, games may be a wonderful form of learning or improving ourselves in various things. We can train our perception, logical thinking, ability of decision, multitasking and countless other skills. The one of the most important thing which we can improve is our memory. But the important question is: Do memory improving games really have such power?

Memory Improving Games
The question if games can really affect human brain and thinking afflicts many scientists around the globe. The results of their research aren’t such satisfactory as we would love to. On the bright side research suggests that we can enhance our brain by training concrete tasks. Therefore we can improve, indeed! On the other hand such improvement does not lead to any change in broad cognitive functions of the brain.

Apparently we were born with specific intelligence and playing memory improving games does not make it any better. The same holds for the capacity of our memory – however, who is fully using the whole potential of his/her brain? In my opinion, even though we are not able to boost the brain capacity by playing games, we still can improve how to avail it. Due to that fact we can enjoy playing games and still succeed to enhance our memory.

Memory Improving Games for Adults
There is plenty of various games in the sea which can help to improve our memory. Typically playing such games leads to more than to better memory. It improves logical thinking, ability of planning and decision making as well as multitasking, quick reactions, etc.

When you look for concrete sites you may try to put in your search engine keywords like “brain games” or “memory improving games”, or you can visit websites like:

http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/braingames/braingames.htm

http://www.ibraining.com/

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/brainsmart/games/

Memory Improving Games for Kids
What can be a better idea than training the brain while it is evolving? Kids are curious, playful and awesome. Starting with smaller kids we can enhance their memory just by asking simple questions about their friends, adventures or we can hide one of their toys and ask which one is gone. As time goes and children grow up you may find some interesting memory improving games here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/brainsmart/games/

But what if we don’t want our kids just to sit in front of a computer screen? The solution is pretty simple because market is full of card games like UNO which may do the trick. Also playing such a simple game as jigsaw puzzle can lead to a significant improvement.

Conclusion
It is only our choice how we decide to take care of our brain. There is plenty of ways how to look after the
brain and playing games is just a one fish in the sea. On the other hand looking to the computer screen whole day long is not healthy at all. Even if we spend our PC time practicing our memory. In the end it is the food and healthy exercise which play the most important role. I would suggest to play brain improving games especially to enjoy extra time on the bus or subway which would be wasted otherwise.

Chimpanzee Fun Facts: The Brain of A Chimpanzee
Do you think that humans are superior to chimps? Scientists from Japanese Primate Research Institute revealed amazing chimpanzee fun facts which may suprise you!

When scientists compared the brain of a chimp with that of a human, they found that chimps had an extraordinary ability to recall numerals better than even adult humans. Previously, they believed that the brain of a chimp is inferior to the human brain.

Comparison: the human brain and the chimp’s brain
The human brain weighs three pounds on average, and it is enormous for our body size. Chimps, which are the closest relatives have one-third the size of our brains. A majority of the brain size difference comes from the enlargement of the association cortex. This region supports sophisticated cognitive functions such as self-awareness, language and problem solving.

Also, the human brain has more neurons and fibers connecting different regions of the brain.

Chimps are better at numbers than humans
Research has shown that young chimps have an astonishing ability to remember numerals. These new chimpanzee fun facts were illustrated in a chimp called Ayumu. The chimp was shown digits on a screen for a split second, and he was able to identify them correctly in different orders, from the lowest to the highest. Adult humans were put through the same test and couldn’t remember the numerals or even recognize them.

This discovery proves that young chimps actually have a better performance in memory tasks when compared to humans. The scientists also tested three different pairs of infant and mother chimpanzees and nine students of the university in the memory task which involved numerals. Both sides were shown four to nine digits briefly, and they were scattered across the screen. The numbers were instantaneously replaced with some blank squares. The participants were to remember which number appeared in what square and then touch the squares, fixing them in ascending order. The chimps got the highest correct answers and were rewarded with apple cubes or raisins for their excellence.

The researchers predictably found that the human participants got worse when the numbers were placed on the screen for shorter periods. They also discovered that three of the young chimps didn’t change their performance even if the numerals were flashed for 210 milliseconds or twice a blink of an eye.

Generally, the young chimp’s performance was better than the adult chimps and humans as well. It can be concluded that in terms of memory, young chimps are superior to humans. Their ability can be likened to photographic memory in humans that allow them to retain an accurate and detailed picture of a pattern or complex scene. It is also called eidetic imagery, and it declines with age as seen inchimps.

Such memory can be useful for these creatures in the wild. For example, if a pack of males sees another group during their patrol, they would need to know the number of enemiesat a glance since they will only have one shot at looking at them.

Chimpanzees are amazing creatures and hopefully further researches will bring another asthonishing chimpanzee fun facts.

Brain Shrinkage Causes
It has been observed over the past 20,000 years that the volume of the brain has reduced to 1350cc from 1500cc. Researches by a team at Bristol University tried to discover the brain shrinkage causes and find out, whether the brain shrinkage continues further in the future.

It is the speed with which we make decisions that matter during life-threatening situations. In pre-historic ages, when man was almost similar to a wild animal, attacks by ferocious animals were the issue of concern. On the other hand, in the present-day scenario, saving oneself from a car accident can be a comparison to that.

One basic human brain fact is – there are two different decision-making centers in the brains of mammals. They work with two
different speeds.

It is known that the brains of human beings and reptiles are almost similar. The only difference is that humans have an outer cortex layer around the sub-cortical part of the brain. We also know that lizards can make decisions fast. This shows that the sub-cortical part of the brain helps in decision-making.

Now, the question is, what is the purpose of having two decision-making parts? It makes the brain size bigger and increases the weight. So, how does it benefit? Moreover, does the older sub-cortical part become unnecessary? Isn’t it one of the brain shrinkage causes?

To answer these questions, Peter Trimmer, the leader of the study developed two theoretical models of the sub-cortex and outer cortex. It was found that the sub-cortex worked very fast but inaccurately whereas the outer cortex worked a bit slower but with more precision.

It can be concluded that when there is a need to take a decision within a very short time, the sub-cortex can be used. It might not work accurately, but helps in taking fast decisions. So, it was appropriate for primitive men whose basic need was to save themselves from attacking animals. On the other hand, the outer cortex might not help in achieving such high speed, but it helps in taking decisions more precisely. So, it is the ideal one for today’s men who have to handle complex and critical situations in the present age.

Thus, from the experiment, Trimmer inferred that so far as threats and complexities are there, human beings will require the sub-cortical part. On the other hand it is impossible to say with certainty, what will be the size of the human brain in the future and whether the brain shrinkage will continue – everything depends on circumstances. Maybe brain shrinkage causes that we are not able to react as quickly as our ancestors did or maybe not. We will see…

Male vs Female Brain – Are They Really Different?
Male vs female brain – that is what divides researches in their opinions regarding the fact whether the male brain and the female brain is significantly different or not.

In the 19th century, some researches claimed that they could determine the s*x of a human being just by observing the brain. However, today it is believed that there is no basic difference between the brain of a male and that of a female.

When the scientists learnt to take brain scans, they tried to differentiate male vs female brain. The disparities found were less significant and largely environment-dependent. However, they help to portray a binary image of the brain. One of these differences is that men have a large amygdala (a region associated with emotions) as compared to women.

Daphna Joel, a behavioral neuroscientist along with his research team, measured the volume of white matter and gray matter in brains of 1400 individuals and conducted studies to understand how male and female brains differ. It was observed that the male brain has a bigger left hippocampus (a part linked with memory) as compared to the female brain.

There are differences in the brains of male and female individuals with respect to the activities they perform, starting from playing video games to bathing. However, only 0.1% of the individuals were found to display stereotypically male or stereotypically female characters.

Joel said that there is nothing called an entirely male brain or entirely female brain. Every brain is a combination of both male and female characteristics. From this, she concludes that for researches related to brain, the s*x is not as an important factor. Moreover, the male and female brains being almost similar, a universal s*x education can be imparted to both male and female students.

Margaret McCarthy, a neuropharmacologist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore has a different opinion to share. She considers s*x as an important parameter to study the brain. She has conducted experiments with rodents and observed that while males are five times as likely to develop autism, females are only twice as likely. Therefore, according to her, by studying the differences between the male brain and the female brain, different biological conclusions can be reached.

Memory Improvement Tip: Facing Problems Remembering Things?
If you are looking for some memory improvement tip, you might be interested in researches conducted in University of Notre Dam. These researches reveal that students who go off to sleep immediately after learning something, have a greater ability to remember it.
Sleep helps in remembering whatever students have studied and enhances the declarative memory.

Declarative memory refers to the ability to remember unrelated facts and figures and can be classified into two categories:-

Episodic memory: Memory related to events.
Semantic Memory: Memory related to facts and figures.
A study among 207 students of the Notre Dam University was conducted by psychologist Jessica Payne and her colleagues. The students had a habit of sleeping at least 6 hours a day. They were made to prepare things requiring both episodic memory and semantic memory and a test was taken after a particular duration. It was observed that in the cases where the students slept just after preparing, they performed better. Thus, it was concluded that if one has something important to remember, he or she should follow a simple memory improvement tip which means to prepare it just before going to bed. In other words, he is telling his sleeping brain to consolidate those data.

Moreover, sleep enhances the lasting ability. The students were divided into two groups – one of them being called as the 24-hours sleeping group and the other called as 24-hours waking group. The sleeping group was found to remember more than its non-sleeping counterpart.

It can be inferred from this fact that the sleeping brain prefers to remember the things which are emotionally salient. Emotional memories also shape our personalities and determine our behavior. Moreover, disorders like depressions are not only related to the emotional memory but also to the REM sleep architecture. Amygdala and hippocampus are the two most active regions during times of sleep. Though the tendency to observe emotional over neutral events can be observed more after a short delay of time, sometimes it is found for long delays also.

So, if you are wondering how to memorize fast or looking for memory improvement tip, sleeping just after preparing could be the best option for you.

Human Brain – Different Facts You Should Know
Human brain is the major part of the central nervous system. It receives information from sensor organs and sends instructions to the different parts of the body. What are some basic facts you should know about human brain?

The functions of various organs in the body depend upon the brain. It is seat of intelligence and memory. It is enclosed by a bony skull and protected by a fluid. Have you ever wondered what it consists of and how it works??

The brain functions are largely dependent on the functions of the various parts.

The architecture of the brain:

The three major parts of the brain are forebrain, mid-brain and the hind-brain.

The hind-brain comprises the upper part of the spinal cord, the brain stem and a ball of tissue called the cerebellum.

The forebrain consists of the cerebrum, another important part and some hidden structures. The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres, left and right, separated by a nerve fiber. Each cerebral hemisphere is divided into different lobes having different functions.

The frontal lobes are concerned with future plans and reasoned arguments.
The parietal lobes help in sensing movement, texture and taste. They are also responsible for reading and arithmetic.
The occipital lobes help in processing images and link them to the memory related to them. Thus, if they are dysfunctional, you may suffer from blindness.
The temporal lobes are related to hearing. They help in the reception of information through the year and relating them to the memories associated with whatever heard. So, when you feel blessed after hearing a melody or rock, thank the temporal lobes for it.
The other parts are:

The cerebral cortex: It is a layer of tissue coating the surface of cerebrum and cerebellum.
The hypothalamus: It is the seat for emotions, excitement, anger etc. It helps you to wake up in the morning and makes you feel tensed during a test, interview or race.
The thalamus: It acts as a clearinghouse of all the information going to and from the spinal cord and cerebrum.
The hippocampus: It is an arching tract of nerve cells acting as a memory indexer. It sends memory to the appropriate part of the cerebral hemisphere and stores it there. It can be retrieved as and when required.
The basic functional unit for brain and other parts of the central nervous system is neurone. A neurone has a cell body called axon with dendrites extending from it. The neurotransmitters help in the transmission of the nerve impulse.

Thus, different facts about human brain and brain functions become clear if we study its parts in detail.
